Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Carpet Range names and Equivalents. 21Jul 08, 2010 3:00 am Hmmm there seems to be stuff read into my posts that is not there. Scott, I'm not sure why you make such a point about WEIGHT. I've not done so, except within the context of the overall carpet specs. You seem to be honing in on that single facet of carpet specs, implying I am suggesting its a big deal. Its NOT. Then you suggest that some sales staff sell based on weight, and manufacturers make an issue of it too. I don't know about all that. Of course good well trained and experienced sales staff are vitally important in helping consumers choose their carpets. Its just that they are hard to find! Most I find have a sales pitch they are taught, and little knowledge of the real world characteristics of carpets out in the field. Ash. Re: Carpet Range names and Equivalents. 22Jul 09, 2010 3:49 pm Looks like I will go with the Godfrey Hirst 'Harmonic Range' in a colour called 'Cobler 180' (chocolate). The specs are as follows from the 'Online Carpet Website'; Residential Rating: Extra Heavy Use Commercial Rating: Light Use Fibre: 100% Nylon Stainblock Pile Weight: approx 40oz (as quoted by salesman not actually stated anywhere I could find) Style: Cut Pile Twist Guarantee: 5 Year Residential Wear My local carpet store use to be a Carpet Choice. Now looks like it has turned into an independent because they have painted over the word 'Choice' and taken away all references of 'Carpet Choice'. The salesman is the owner and is also one of the installers. He mentioned he has carpeted is own house with this range and is one of his best sellers in the shop. I was a bit concerned with the Guarantee being only 5 years when all the others had 15 years though. The colour was the only chocolate colour I could find without looking grey at certain times of the day. I have been quoted $2326 for 15.9 linear metres fully laid on Dunlop Gold Foam or Bridgestone Gold Rubber. Not sure which way to go as yet. The salesman has said it costs him more for the foam but recommends it. He seems to think that the rubber overtime turns into a playdoh type substance and often flattens. He also said that his experience whilst removing old carpets and underlays is that he has to scrape the rubber from the floor because it can stick? Not sure about that. I have removed the old carpet and disposed of it myself. They are two adjoining rooms with no stairs and just finishing off the painting. Is this a reasonable price for laying this quality of carpet or could I do better? Hopefully placing an order in the next couple of weeks. Re: Carpet Range names and Equivalents. 23Jul 09, 2010 4:27 pm This one http://www.onlinecarpet.com.au/products ... 9|Harmonic Which colour is it? I'd suggest upgrading to Dunlop Excellay underlay. Much better and wouldn't cost much more. Those things can be true of the cheaper rubber underlays like 'black' and 'gold' Ash. Re: Carpet Range names and Equivalents. 25Jul 09, 2010 7:16 pm Price looks ok. Worth spending a bit more for better underlay though. Ask what price it would be to upgrade to Excellay. Also ask for a quote for Springtred Extra. 'Extra' will be a bit softer if you prfer that, but Excellay will be better for the carpet. I posted a link to that site coz I find it easy to find a lot of popular carpets there, and they sound like they have reasonable prices and service. But I don't know much about them. The info is limited about the carpet, but it looks like a good carpet for the price range. I'd say it will give quite good service generally, and feel nice. After a few years or so, you will find the traffic ways settle a bit, and lose the depth of colour. So if you move the lounge out, you will see a contrast between the trafficked area and the area covered by the lounge. Mostly this will be due to pile settling and matting a bit, as well as a bit of colour loss. But this will mostly be restored by a good steam clean. With good care, the carpet will easily last 12-16 years before you will be wanting to change it. Have a good carpet tech steam clean it every 12-18 months. After about the 4th clean, get him to reapply Teflon or a similar protector to the traffic ways to keep the carpet's stain resistance at optimum levels. Ash.
