Firstly, sorry but I missed your post before. Now if you had painters in, THEY are totally responsible for preventing any kind of damage to your home when working there, and also to rectify any damage. Really, if they get paint on the carpet, they should know how to clean it up properly. If they are not able to, they should pay a qualified carpet cleaning technician to do this. If for any reason this is not satisfactory, carpet replacement is appropriate. They should have public liability insurance to cover this. Now let me say........ BOILING WATER IS WRONG!!! If you feel it 'worked' (which is questionable) it should not be assumed that it has really solved the problem. Its little more than a band aid solution, and the paint is not removed but possibly dissolved deeper into the carpet. This would not work at all if paint has dried in any case. Now proper action to take if paint gets on the carpet is to effectively remove it. This means scooping it up as much as possible firstly using a spatula, spoon or blunt knife. Something like a putty knife is good. From the outside to the centre, scoop it up and have something handy like paper towel and a bucket to put the recovered paint into. Care should be taken to NOT push paint deeper into the carpet. This is why sliding under it with a spatula is so important, so its lifted up without allowing it to penetrate further into the carpet. Only after most is recovered this way should you proceed to step two. Next, if its a oil based paint, use some turps or a suitable solvent. DO NOT PUT SOLVENT DIRECTLY ONTO THE CARPET. You must use clean WHITE absorbent towelling like a cotton nappy. Fold it into a pad. Apply a little solvent to the pad and apply to the paint. Do not rub or scrub, but blot and roll the pad across the paint spot. It will absorb up into the nappy. Keep folding and using fresh sections of the nappy and repeat until all the paint is removed. Finally place a thick layer of white paper towel over the area and some weight, and leave for several hours. This will absorb up any remainder as it dries. If its a water based paint do exactly the same as above, but don't use a solvent. Use water instead. If the paint has started to dry, use a good (Woolsafe approved) carpet spotter to help emulsify the paint. If paint has dried, call a professional stain removal expert.
