Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 07, 2010 1:54 pm We are about to start building a new house and have been looking at different flooring options. We were set on getting wood floor for the living areas but then we went into a tile shop and found a really nice tile that we really like and can't decide which one to choose. The tiles are a little bit cheaper but not enough to make much of a difference. What have other people done and are you happy with it. Re: Tiles or wood floor 2Jun 07, 2010 2:02 pm when you say wood floor what type of wood floor where you looking at. When you said tiles what type are you looking at. A proper solid timber floor is great. I reckon the next best thing is a properly layed porcelain tile floor but hat can be too cold. Re: Tiles or wood floor 3Jun 07, 2010 2:05 pm We have not decided yet, but will probably go with all living area (living, dining, media rooms) to be solid timber, and our kitchen to be porcelain tiles, just for a bit of contrast. We're not sure about having timber in the kitchen as we tend to drop and spill a lot of things Re: Tiles or wood floor 4Jun 07, 2010 4:08 pm Timber floor is by far the best. Works well in the kitchen, is warm to walk on, looks better etc Of course I aint that objective either...... Re: Tiles or wood floor 7Jun 07, 2010 7:53 pm We have indoor cats and dogs, so we've gone with a large tile throughout most of the house. Only the bedrooms will be carpeted. Timber would have been lovely, but we have so much timber furniture, that it would just have looked odd. Very happy with our tiles Re: Tiles or wood floor 8Jun 07, 2010 8:10 pm I love the warmth of timber flooring, and that freshly polished shine... I don't like that they mark so easily (my dining chairs have done some damage, as had the dog) and after 18months I really am starting to hate my timber floors! That said, not everyone is a careless and I'm sure many homeone'ers take much better care of their floors than I. Also the species and finish chosen can play a big role in the floors longevity - but for me, I will definitely go with tiles next time. Re: Tiles or wood floor 10Jun 08, 2010 10:12 am Timber for us. We have Nyotah timber laminate in our present house and had a cat who has scratched the floor considerably but that is part and parcel of having timber. Still looks good, but lived in. We will be using timber again but no longer have the cat, not that that would have made the choice any harder. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. I don't mind Mum's tiles, but they have underfloor heating. I think tiles are cold in winter without this. We have timber in the living areas (cherry box) and slate in the wet areas. I love the timber. We have dogs, a cat and horses, so lots of dirt traipsed through the house. The floor is marked now after 14 years, but mostly be furniture (moving and desk chairs, chairs with wheels are the enemy of wood floors ) However, we will get it sanded and polished again when we have finished renovating and it will be good as new We are planning on removing the remainder of the carpet and putting timber down. Re: Tiles or wood floor 12Jun 20, 2010 9:44 am I had my house in Florida tiled throughout and found it to be hard on the feet, anything dropped breaks for certain, and our cats were limping for awhile after install (they were used to jumping off furniture onto carpet). We are beginning a build in Perth and it will be timber of some sort in living areas and carpet in the bedrooms/theatre.
