Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 03, 2010 10:23 am At the time of putting down a deposit for our carpet we were asked to leave the tack (I assume this is the timber with nails) in place as they can be reused. Is it advisable to do this, or when we remove the old carpet we remove the tacks too and get the installers to put in new ones? Re: Keep or replace the tacks for new carpet? 2Jun 03, 2010 6:49 pm Try this. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33493 Re: Keep or replace the tacks for new carpet? 3Jun 03, 2010 7:16 pm If it is a concrete floor and you take up the S/E, sometimes the concrete can be badly broken up when removing the ezicrete nails from the floor. Fixing new S/E to badly broken edges can sometimes be a chore for the layer. Leave it down and the layer should re-nail/repair the existing S/E, as needed. If it is a timber floor, it won't make much difference if you pull it up. The only thing to be aware of, is the gap between the wall and the S/E. It has to be the correct gap for the new carpet that you are having laid. If the new carpet is a lot thinner than the existing carpet, you may get a large dip to the wall, as a recent post has just found out. Re: Keep or replace the tacks for new carpet? 6Jun 04, 2010 6:28 pm Its normal for the existing 'smoothedge' to be left in place, unless there is damage or other reasons to remove it. Check that it is not water damaged (mouldy/rotten and/or corroded pins). Check that it is secure, with no movement (if so the layer should make it secure) Check that it is plywood, and not the cheap rubbish particleboard type. Check that the gully is correct (about 60 % of new carpet thickness) If rooms are large, the smoothedge should be 'architectural type (wider with 3 rows of pins). Cheers! Ash. Sorry for shortening terms too much, and assuming people know what they mean. Now I will go in the naughty corner for a while ok thanks - yes was wondering if that should have been listed as Option Three! 2 7757 Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings.
