Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 06, 2007 12:21 pm Hi all, it's been a while since I last posted...
Building with Henley (Ascot 384) and a couple of weeks away from our colour appt... Just arrived back from 'Macey's the Flooring Giant' as we wanted to get an idea on products and price.. We were quoted on the 'Signature' floorcoverings timber laminate as well as the Tarkett and a some carpet (can't remember name).... My question is to do with the measurements... Full timber laminate downstairs came to approx. 157 m2 - I recall when I measured off the plan I arrived at a 110 m2 figure. I know there is wastage but that much? As a rule of thumb what is everyone's experience when the supplier calculates wastage?? Also, for the carpet (for full 2 storey) - it measured to 41.5 broadloom mts - what would avg wastage % be on carpet.. Just want to know as I don't want my so called 10% discount (Henley and that supplier apparently have an arrangement) does not wither away on over inflated wastage... Thanks Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 2Oct 06, 2007 12:35 pm If I recall correctly broadloom is 3.6 metres wide. Double check though. Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 3Oct 06, 2007 12:40 pm The best way to get around this is to go back the flooring people who did the plan measure, do you have a copy of what they did? You should, they should have given you a copy.
Go back, sit down with them and get them to show you were ALL the joins are in the carpet, I gather you have chosen a 3.66 width carpet, depending on sizes of your rooms there can be some wastage! BUT a clever measurer will be able to use the cuts offs else where. You need to discus the joins, how many there are and how many you are prepared to have to save money! MOST carpet’s now join really well so having a few joins in one room is not a problem. Just make sure there are as little amount of joins in walkways, this could be a problem down the track! Laminate flooring if not measured properly can mean a huge wastage….go back over that with them as well. NOTE to all, when getting measurements done off floor plans at the flooring suppliers, take notice of what is being done….ask questions; don’t just assume they know what they are doing. By the way, a measurement from a floor plan should be a ROUGH guild to pricing. Once the home is build they go back to do a final measure to make sure it’s all OK! Go back…discus these issues again with them, ask questions, get a copy of the floor plan once the measurements are market on it! Take that plan to another flooring comp and see what the difference is!!!!! ![]() Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 4Oct 06, 2007 1:54 pm Hi fojean, we too are building with "H" and went to Macey's but have instead chosen to purchase our carpet and timber flooring from ***.
If you are interested in getting a second opinion, and possibly a much cheaper price, visit the *** on Princes hwy near Blackburn Rd in Clayton and ask for Mariana. She helped us out! She has recently built with "H' too. My advice, get a second opinion on price and measurements. You might be pleasantly surprised......We were.... Very happy, even getting better quality timber than what we thought that we could afford.....even witht the 10% discount from "H' ! Good Luck! ![]() ![]() Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 5Oct 06, 2007 7:34 pm Thanks for the advice Michelle.....will definately 'scrytinise' measurements next time...
.and Phoenix...great recommendation..thanks!! Will pay them a visit.... did you go for a timber laminate yourself...if so, which one???..and cost? if you don't mind me... Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 6Oct 07, 2007 12:38 am hi fojean, i have sent you a PM with details. Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 8Oct 09, 2007 12:04 pm Eimaj, for your info, fojean went to *** last saturday and bought the carpet and timber for their house. From what i understand, they got a great deal so are very happy. They mentioned that they will post their experience on here soon.
They were originally quoted for 157m2 of timber and 41.5m2 of carpet. *** measured 140m2 of timber and 33m2 of carpet. 25.5m2 is a lo of wastage in my opnion.... so my advice is............. ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION FOR MEASUREMENTS !!!!!!!! My recommendation is for anyone wanting to get a better price, go to *** at 1299 Princes Hwy, Clayton. Ph. 9265 5555. Ask for Mariana or Stephen in the floor coverings area. Tell them a user on Homeone recommended you. We bought Boral Silkwood Engineered Timber Flooring 2 strip 166mmat a little more than Laminate or the cheaper brands of flooring at around $60/m2 add about $20 for laying. Also bought Godfrey Hirst sisal look 50% wool / 50% nylon for about $35/m2 with top of the range Dunlop Foam underlay - fully installed!!! They also have Tuftmaster and many of the leading brands, so it can't hurt to take a trip down there. You never know, it might save you 000's, like it did us!!!!!! I love to bargain hunt and have bought great quality carpet from *** for our last house too...They guarantee never to be beaten on price. Check out www.***.com.au They also have locations in South Melbourne and Narre Warren. Good luck and happy shopping!!!! If anyone has a good experience with ***, please post it here for all to see. Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 10Oct 09, 2007 8:28 pm ...you beat me to it Phoenix!!....didn't have a chance to post until now so thanks for your very accurate account ![]() Highly recommend Fowle's based on price and service so get on down there.... ...you wouldn't believe it...hadn't heard for Fowle's (sales that it) until a few days ago and get home today and a Fowle's 'junk mail' brochure was in the l/box....whhaaaaatt!!! Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 11Oct 26, 2007 7:38 pm I'm terrible..... ![]() I've changed my mind on our timber flooring-again. We originally chose the Boral Silkwood Spotted Gum flooring in the 166mm - 2 strip variety. I am now changing it to the 80mm single strip. A little more expensive but at least i have 2.4m x 80mm wide, long length boards instead of a 2.4m board which has 4-8 staves or pieces of timber per board. Happy now, but still trying to talk hubby around to go, yet again over budget on the carpet too....Will keep working on that one ![]() ![]() Re: Timber Laminate and Carpet query 12Oct 26, 2007 8:45 pm ![]() I'm terrible..... ![]() I've changed my mind on our timber flooring-again. I was looking at Dunlop Heartridge vinyl in the colour… 0 1678 ![]() That's good to hear thankyou. Do they show up footprints. In my last house I had the large porcelain tiles and they were a nightmare to keep clean. What colour floor did… 2 1438 ![]() Thank you. Do I use timber floorboards for stairs or do people use timber treads? Or is both the same? 6 2470 |
