Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 17, 2010 9:36 pm Hi I have been going insane trying to choose flooring. Boral silwood flooring, spotted gum in the natural greade is on sale at the moment at $61 sq m. I'm very tempted to bite the bullet and lock this in however any comments on this particular product would be greatly appreciated. I am also a little worried about the natural grade. If we were to buy this we would consider floating it rather than direct sticking. Budget is an issue for us. Looking forward to hearing feedback Cheers Me Re: Flooring 2May 17, 2010 10:08 pm Well I can only tell you that we put spotted gum through our whole home - except for the bedrooms which are the original kauri(?) pine - I've just posted some photos of my new home - Fawlty Towers post We love the look - the sanders said our flooring was A grade quality & judging by the finish, they are right! Jazzie Life is like a lolly, suck it and see Re: Flooring 3May 17, 2010 10:19 pm i was looking into Boral, and found quite a few people have had problems with the Natural grade finish quality. Even the Boral website says "Natural grade which has a high level of natural feature and may contain some finish imperfections". I was also talking to the flooring company that i chose and he was saying he keeps clear of the natural grade because of the finish problems. try doing a search on boral + natural and i'm sure you'll find a few stories from other posters. Re: Flooring 4May 18, 2010 2:44 pm If you shopped around a bit you could probably find cheaper supplies of "natural" grade (also know as feature, australiana, cover etc) Nothing wrong with installing natural grade - just needs a little putty and care in the installation and it comes up fine. I put quite a few of these down and they look fine when finished. I would be careful about thinking 'direct stick' is cheaper than installing over a substrate. I generally charge more for direct stick because it is much more labour intensive Cheers Re: Flooring 5May 18, 2010 7:43 pm nessie, you are talking about the Boral engineered flooring aren't you? Re: Flooring 6May 18, 2010 8:55 pm Hey all!!....Thank you all so much for your comments. I did chase up the problems Phoenix was having with this product and decided to go down to the factory today at Osborne Park to have a look. I know i'm not getting a high grade in the timber, but for my budget I can accept the markings. I actually think the markings bring more character to the wood hmmmm. Jazzie - Love the look of Spotted Gum and glad it has worked well for you Little Buddy - Thanks for the advice. Took boards out of random packs today and found that 1 board from approx 30 that I looked at had a finish imperfection. Makes me a litte uneasy. The imprefection was slight but nevertheless there. Namtrak - Can you reccommend one product that you have worked with that has always performed well. Do you install??....How much should we expect to pay per meter to have them installed both floating or direct stick. My other question to you is ....Are novices capabled of floating this floor and having it look good?? Little Buddy - Yes Boral silkwood spotted gum natural Thanks guys 1000000% definitely add insulation. I have in my home and it makes a big difference minimising sound transfer. Insulation is pretty cheap and definitely worth it 2 6191 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15907 Hi there, I'm a conplete newbie to this, but I'm looking to put a floor down in my 6x9m shed.
