Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 15, 2010 1:40 pm Help.... Need to lay over an existing slate floor (and NO I'm NOT taking up the slate). I get different opinions from the "professionals". Was looking at a SDN carpet and a Dunlop (forget the name but a quality) underlay. Only 1 "professional" has suggested I should lay a sealant / leveller over the slate to even out some of the bumps etc, as he states that after 6 months, I will start to see the outline of the slate through the underlay / carpet. Is this correct.... It makes sense to me, but then why didn't these other "professionals" advise the same. Also, Melbourne based, what sort of rate per lineal metre should I expect to pay for laying carpet on slate. I understand they need to plug the edges for laying, but I also have varying opinions on that and the cost. Appreciate any advice from those who have been down this path... Re: Laying Carpet over Existing Slate on a Slab Floor 2May 15, 2010 1:52 pm I know you said NO to taking up the slate, but it is the best thing to do. Contractors can do it. May be something you wish to avoid, but its best in the long run. If you must lay carpet over the slate, the slate should DEFINITELY have a levelling compound over it to level it. Otherwise that slate will haunt you for ever! Ideally, the slate should be cleaned and possibly etched first to give the levelling compound something to stick to. You need to consider the height variance where the edge of this floor meets other floors too. Might need some sort of ramp or trim to make the transition tidier. Ash. Really, your carpet installation will not be much good unless you prepare the floor beneath properly. The costs to clean slate and apply levelling compound my well be similar to taking up the slate. Do it properly, and stop trying to take shortcuts, is my advice! Ash. Re: Laying Carpet over Existing Slate on a Slab Floor 4May 15, 2010 5:17 pm Taking it up would probably be cheaper than applying a prime and 2-3 coats of a floor levelling compound. I have three different contacts here in Melbourne who do it. If you want their details, just shoot me an email. To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even. To install most types of… 1 389 just pull up the slate.
