Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 13, 2010 4:25 pm Hi there, im looking at using either Spotted Gum or Blackbutt flooring in my kitchen and dining area. The area itself is about 7m x 5m. Its not huge and it has a couple of hallways coming off it. My problem is, i love the look of spotted gum and LOVE the greens in it but i worry that it might be a bit busy for the area. The other option is Blackbutt which doesnt have as much variation in colour. For those of you with either of these timbers, what do you think of yours? Would you recommend it at all? Thanks guys Donna Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 3May 14, 2010 9:42 am hmmm i have blackbutt, and absolutely love it. I also like spotted gum. If the price was the same as blackbutt i probably would have gone for spotted. However spotted gum is way more expensive and hard to find in standard grade. I was after a standard grade timber and in perfections stand out to much in select grade timbers (this is just my opinion) Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 4May 14, 2010 11:37 am What type of flooring do you have in the adjacent rooms? I would try and tie in the new flooring with the existing so it has a flow on effect (if possible of course). Confused Renovator Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 5May 14, 2010 12:47 pm Hi there, I have chocolate brown carpet in the other rooms. The timber will be going down the hallway aswell which is why i didnt want anything too dark or busy. I really like the look of spotted gum, in every photo i have seen it looks great and the colours are beautiful. I didnt realise that it was heaps more expensive than the blackbutt so i might have to look into that, the decision might be made for me. I also wasnt aware of the nsw spotted gum being lighter either. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 6May 14, 2010 10:44 pm Speaking technical characteristics, Spotted Gum is far superior than B/Butt. I wouldn't worry much about variations in colour. Grey Ironbark (which is probably the best timber grown in Oz) looks quite similar in colour but the variety of it was virtually not existent - I've ordered almost 3000 metres of it recently (flooring and decking) and colour consistency was at about 98%... ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 7May 15, 2010 10:19 pm I think spotted gum, with darker and lighter variations including chocolate colours, would go better with a chocolate carpet compared to a lighter blackbutt, but that is just my opinion. Spotted gum is harder than blackbutt. I don't think the price difference is that great when looking at the laid price? Maybe $10 or $20 a meter but not sure. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 8May 18, 2010 5:22 am By the way (please do not ban me for an ad - as a customer who got a huge amount of timber from them, NRT have put me on their emailing list) - NRT (Northern River Timbers) have clearance sale of their stock. Character grade BB was $31 m2 (~50 m2 available) and SG was $35 per m2 (88 m2 available). Both are 80x19 mm. They also had SG in 130x19 board at $45 p/m2 having more than 100m2 available. ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 9May 18, 2010 7:44 am Just had spotted gum through entire rebuild except for 3 bedrooms which have the original Kauri pine - the sander was fantastic and said we had chosen A1 grading I was concerned how the spotted gum would ooze into the bedrooms from the hallway (the look of it I mean ) but it ties in beautifully. here is a close up of the spotted gum which hopefully shows you the true colours - I think it's stunning. I took a sample of the Spotted Gum (NSW) and it looked really pinkish to me. But all the photos i see of it i really like. Im still unsure but considering Bamboo also. Thanks heaps for all your replies and information!! But all the photos i see of it i really like. Each piece of spotted gum varies quite a lot so you probably just got a pink one. When you actually lay the floor you will get pink bits, cream bits, brown bits, and bits that look so good you drool when you look at them... My spotted gum hasn't even been polished yet but I already have favourite boards... Next I will be naming them. So happy with our choice - it looks amazing think I'm reiterating Jazz Life is like a lolly, suck it and see Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 17May 21, 2010 9:51 pm I would definitely say Jazzie has solid timber floor-I am yet to see a floating floor look like this. I'm a huge fan of blackbutt but we got grey ironbark (other half chose as floors are his forte) and I am thrilled. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 18May 22, 2010 8:20 pm We decided to get spotted gum for our living area.. It was a hard decision to choose between blackbutt and spotted gum. As spotted gum is a harder board and the price is the same as blackbutt, we finally decided to go with spotted gum. Here is the picture.. do you guys think there is too much variation in colour? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 19May 22, 2010 8:24 pm I think the more colour variation the better and whoever lays the floors should be able to mix the panels in well. We love ours, lots of character and I am finidng new bits that I think were created since they've been in the house but it's just I never noticed them before. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 20May 22, 2010 9:19 pm Hi Mrslin, what if you went with a wider board? I think thats what im going to do. Try to get a 130mm wide board that way it wont look too busy (hopefully). I do really like the colours in your sample though! Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder.
