Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 21May 22, 2010 9:33 pm Its always personal preference, but I have seen spotted gum in 130mm wide and don't like it anywhere near as much as 80mm boards. Maybe its to do with having wide boards with a lot of variation between them? The variations in the narrower boards look better to me. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 25May 25, 2010 10:56 pm If you are talking about solid boards there rather than engineered, don't forget to consider that the wider the board, the more risk you have of problems like peaking, cupping etc. 80mm boards or less are the least risky. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 28May 27, 2010 9:54 pm Hi, I am in a similar situation as you. My husband loves the spotted gum look but we are having through our whole house which is going to be about 140sq and I am worried that all the variations in the colours are going to appear busy. My other choice is Grey Ironbark and I recently went to a wedding that had Sydney blue gum and it looked stunning. Just too many choices. A friend of ours recently laid blackbutt and it did look good but IMO if you have brown carpet and the area is not huge then go with the spotted gum. I have been told its the most popular flooring at the moment so all those people cant have got it wrong. Good Luck Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 30May 31, 2010 9:32 pm Does anyone put timber in their kitchen? I've seen all the display homes they generally do.. however what concerns me is that the kitchen is where things can fall and crack or make marks on the timber floor.. so just wondering has anyone ignored flooring the kitchen with timber however keeping, the hallway living, family areas with timber flooring.. or will it just look weird? http://dreamzattheponds.blogspot.com To be invited to our blog send a PM with your email. I carried the timber on into my kitchen. I think it looks much better that way as it flows through. Wherever you have a change in flooring type it can change the flow of your house or make it seem smaller. Don't forget tiles can be chipped or broken in the kitchen as well - and the damage may be way more obvious on tiles than on timber. If you're that worried, get a harder timber and that will help too. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 33Jun 01, 2010 7:55 pm We put spotted gum throughout the entire rebuild & into the kitchen - looks amazing, just love the flow thru look. Our bedrooms still have the original kauri pine. The whole house was sanded before we moved back in and the spotted gum in the hallway just oozes in with the kauri beautifully - initially I was worried about the two different woods but couldn't be happier with the results. We''re tossing up between 19mm thick solid boards direct onto joists vs laying yellow tongue then overlay of 13mm solid wood. Any thoughts? Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 36Jun 06, 2010 11:12 am neil_se Jazzie what grade timber are your floors? It's a solid floor called Select grading ..... even the sander guy commented on the quality a number of times We are thinking of using another grading for the back decking. We've seen a finished decking & it also looks lovely, without using the quality product ($$) we used inside. The spotted gum flooring also blended beautifully with the original Kauri pine we left in the 3 bedrooms camelia Oh Jazzie! Your description is mouth-watering...can we please see some pics????? http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee182/suzanne251151/spottedgumkauri1.jpg http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee182/suzanne251151/spottedgumkauri2.jpg Jazz Life is like a lolly, suck it and see Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 39Jun 09, 2010 8:51 pm Kauri is my fave wood ever!! Looks awesome in your home Jazz. Re: Spotted Gum and Blackbutt - need opinions 40Jun 10, 2010 1:35 pm MelbReno We're about to put in some grey ironbark. We''re tossing up between 19mm thick solid boards direct onto joists vs laying yellow tongue then overlay of 13mm solid wood. Any thoughts? We have our original pine floorboards on the joints and you can feel the cold coming up from under the house and also the dust seems to accumulate quite quickly. We are going to be laying new hardwood flooring and will be putting it straight over the old stuff to create a barrier. Therefore I would put the yellow tongue and then the wood. Thank you so much for the effort. We will use it to talk with builder. We also had idea of building duplex instead and seeking suggest ions. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=106744 11 13843 Hello It is good to have a planned bathroom reno to suit your budget and design, living for 10 years I think you need a bathtub 4 10374 Looking to start the journey of becoming an owner builder in SA.
