We are building for the first time so would like know how to go about choosing timber floor. some of the ques we ask may sound v basic In the forum I hve seen a couple of post on laminate flooring , floating , engineered, prefinshed etc. what is the major difference between these? How should one choose the timber floor - 1. what type of wood and what cost$$ 2 how much thickness is good 3. what kind of underlays one should look at 4. How easy/ difficut is it to DIY ? any help here will be highly appreciated. Thanks !! I will try and answer no. 4 as I have done a DIY laminate job in our new house recently. I guess it all depends on how 'handy' you are. Correct low spots on the slab by using a self-levelling compound *There is a chance you may have to grind any high spots on the slab Undercut at doorways Lay the boards Install the quad Rooms that are basically square will go down quite easily. If you have odd shapes or lots of doorways this will be more difficult and take longer to install. You can get advice from the supplier on how to install laminate flooring. I will try and get to your question today sometime. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Timber Floor - Starting with the Basics !!! :-) 6Oct 30, 2007 5:08 pm Debbie….depending on what type of timber flooring you are going to lay, will reflect somewhat on your width of boards.
You need to sort that out first…..real timber, floating floor? Your underlay usually comes with the floating floor and should be included in the price. It’s probably not THAT important to have the best underlay for this type of flooring, unlike carpet, where you should spend extra on. I suggest you take yourself to a large flooring supplier in your area. Get them to show you all the types of flooring available and the underlays. They will ALL be different prices, depending on the quality. This should help you get your head around it. Your much better off looking at the products than have us talk about them. Good luck, take your time and do your homework on each product you like. you are very right ! I had alredy been to a shop checking on flooring today. the salesperson there suggested lamite flooring and the underlay was included in the price. He said laminate was better in the sense it was scratch n dent proof, easy to replace. boards. Vs timber which he showed how it could dent ! it had one plus pt of being able to resand. He suggested 8 mm for laminate . Is that ok ? i havent got around underlay as yet. I guess that will be on next visit He also suggested 100% Nylon carpet"twist' one. Dono if Is it better than wool or the rt one to go for ? any suggestions Regards Debbie Building in Western suburb Re: Timber Floor - Starting with the Basics !!! :-) 9Oct 30, 2007 7:03 pm Debbie…..I sold flooring for 2 & ½ years while working for Carpet Court.
the salesperson there suggested lamite flooring and the underlay was included in the price. He said laminate was better in the sense it was scratch n dent proof, easy to replace. boards. I disagree with the above statement the sales guy told you….but then I know why he told you that….he wants to sell you Laminate flooring. Personally, I would prefer a real timber floor. It can be sanded back many times in its life, no problems. Laminate can only be sanded back once in its life and VERY carefully at that! As to replacing a board…..that would be a nightmare! It’s not as easy as he made it sound. Laminate flooring is very drummy…….makes a lot of noise when you walk on it with shoes on. 8mm….the thinker the better! Those people with Laminate floors usually love them……but to me they have a shorter life span! Nylon Carpet – I have a polypropylene carpet……this is made from melted down drink bottles….so you could say I have a plastic carpet. Looks great! Very modern. Nylon is a different story….unless you are prepared to pay mid to top dollar for a nylon carpet you will find it will tread down in walk ways very quickly! The best carpet to buy would be an 80% wool 20% nylon twist; this is a very strong carpet and will last a long time. A GOOD nylon…..mid price range $180 to $220 per lineal mt will be a good buy as well. Carpet has got so expensive!!!! Hope this has helped!! If you really want to know how much solid timber really dents, go to a retailer that only sells solid timber. Then try denting it. Only then will you know. I have a sample of coated Brazilian Walnut (hardness: 16.4 - Very Hard) and I can only get the slightest of dents from pushing hard with my fingernail. And I have strong fingernails. Reminds me of a trip to Godfreys to buy an LG vacuum cleaner. Choice Magazine told me it was a good choice and that was enough for me. I had already checked that the store had what I wanted and when I went to pick it up the salesman wanted to demonstrate an expensive Weilheimer. He got me to vacuum using both and the LG basically had no suction and would blow dust out of it's vent. What a disaster, the LG was a terrible vacuum cleaner!!!! How could I (or Chocie) be so wrong. I stuck to my original selection and low and behold, when I got home the LG vacuum cleaner provided plenty of suction. From which I get one of my life motos: Never trust a salesman. Choice magazine has published appalingly ill-informed info about the topic too! Ash.
