Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 01, 2010 7:06 pm Hi Ash I am just wondering if you can fill me in on polyester carpets, we started our carpet search this weekend and the first salesperson steered us towards a 100% Polyester from an American company (Shaw), other shops took us straight to the SDN's once they knew we had 2 small boys. I thought I had a bit of knowledge from reading these threads but when thrown to the wolves I was overwhelmed. What is a polyester carpet - is it better than/worse than SDN's, why don't more shops sell these? The salesperson got a bit cranky when I started quizzing her, particularly when I asked about laying carpet!! Your help would be great!!! Re: Polyester Carpet - Advice please Ash 2May 01, 2010 8:28 pm Hmmm... Shelby I'd have to say its best to take a wide bert from polyester pile carpets. They may look and feel lovely in the store, but they don't perform well in many ways. Its mostly the oleophylic (oil loving) properties of polyester that make it soil quickly in traffic ways. They also usually have problems with texture change, such as compression, matting and 'corn-rowing' where subjected to traffic. And NOT a lot of fun to clean. I will tend to charge about 25 to 50% more to clean polyesters than most other carpets because they take so much work to clean. Thankfully, not a lot of polyester is sold in Australia. There is a loose rule of thumb when it comes to carpets. Pay more, get better performance! But polyesters are often an exception to the rule. They are often quite expensive and beautiful when new. But in terms of value for money, about the worst choice that one could make! Yes, you will find many suppliers steering you towards SDN's. The sales pitch always sounds so good. Some are good, but many do not perform as well as other nylons with stain release treatments. Look at Redbook carpets if you are thinking of Nylons, (unless the carpet is going to be exposed to lots of sunlight). Ash. Re: Polyester Carpet - Advice please Ash 4May 07, 2010 9:27 pm Am braving the carpet sales people again tomorrow, not looking forward to it!!! Was so burnt when we did a reno and last weekends carpet shopping experience didn't give me much confidence!!! I would rather give birth!!!! Re: Polyester Carpet - Advice please Ash 5May 07, 2010 11:32 pm It should be a FUN exercise! Shelby, what qualities are most important to you? What do you want from a carpet? Give me some info about the expected service the carpets are to give, what rooms, decor themes etc etc. Perhaps I can then give you a bit of a short list of carpet types to look for. Ash. Re: Polyester Carpet - Advice please Ash 6May 08, 2010 12:49 pm Hey Ash We are building a 2 storey house, upstairs will be 4 bed + open void/retreat area, this will be carpeted. Downstairs is tiled this includes the entrance, meals, family, kitchen, rumpus (using a natural sandstone looking tile). We also have a study and living area downstairs that we were planning on carpeting, they are opposite each other and at the entrance to the home. I have 2 small boys, aged 2 & 4, we hope to stay in the house for 7+ years, I vacuum every other day (though this may change in the bigger house ) am anal about where my kids eat food and am going to attempt to be strict about no shoes allowed on my new carpet - control freak . I would like a carpet that wears well, feels nice (stock standard thing really), main stains I think we will face would be with kids and tummy bugs. My thoughts were to go for a twist, we had a pattern when we did the reno so this time am steering towards the twist. The problem is we unfortunately put a deposit on a carpet with a particular shop (caught out in a weak moment after a day of lights, blinds, furniture shopping - building houses is fun!!), we have since changed our minds after looking into things a bit more . I am furious at myself for letting this happen espec as I am usually a shopper that never makes decisions - why did I do this!!!! We can't get a refund but we can choose a different product. The sales person is pushing a SDN or polyester. The SDN is a Studio Line, she said the Red Book is white dyed so doesn't really want to talk to us about it (she is really trying to sell us what she wants). But she keeps hammering the Shaw Polyester saying its "great value for money" for a really good quality poly that will perform better than the comparably priced SDN. The more I speak to this woman the more I dislike her and her carpets!!!! I feel better after this debrief!!! Thanks for reading. Any thoughts appreciated! Re: Polyester Carpet - Advice please Ash 7May 08, 2010 4:44 pm Shelby, have sent you a PM. If the house has areas where a lot of sunlight is on the carpets or is in a coastal area a SDN may be advised. Polyester is a mistake waiting to be laid!! But with your stated attention to caring well for carpets, I reckon quality wool carpets may serve you best. And spray dyed nylons (she salls white nylon) with stain blockers and stain resistant treatments are normally far better than most SDN's, despite the fixation many retailers have with SDN's. Seems the store just wants you to buy the lines they are selling in volume, which does not necessarily serve YOU-the customer! Ash.
