All installations materials I read recommend putting down backerboard then the tile. My problem with this is it raises my floor up and the surrounding carpet and hardwood wouldn't match up with the new tile floor. Can you lay tile on wood subfloor? Yes! 1st the wood floor must be sound( have no movement on it). If there is movement you must screw it to the joists. 2nd Apply a generous layer of PVA adhesive and allow to dry. 3rd Add and mix PVA adhesive to your tile adhesive and treat just as normal and the job will last many years Re: Tile Flooring Installation 3Sep 06, 2004 1:31 pm In deference to the previous reply - no you can't ( successfully).
1. Ensure your flooring is secure - renail any loose boards 2. Install a suitable underlay as per the manufactures recommendations. 3. Lay your tiles as per the adhesive manuf. instructions The join between the tiled area and the existing carpeted area is covered by a 'cover strip' usually available from your tile supplier. The difference in height (usually through door openings) is is taken up by the cover strip. In some situations, where for example thick slate flooring is used, a 't' piece edge strip is employed. In normal situations carpet allowance (including underlay) is close to the tiles plus undelay height.
