Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 28, 2010 12:08 pm Hello all, I am hoping for a little advice from some more experienced renovators/floor installers. I currently have unpolished wooden boards installed over ply and am having the kitchen installed. Once the kitchen cabinets are completely in, the appliances and benchtop will be next. That just leaves the boards to be polished, the skirts to go on and the painting to be completed. The problem i have is that we would like to move in ASAP, and I don’t have a huge amount of cash to throw at the skirts and the painting to get it quickly done. I am thinking that I will have the boards polished as soon as the kitchen is in, and then do the skirts and painting progressively over the ensuing weeks once we have moved in. Although the preferred method is to have the painting and skirts done prior to polishing, is it going to be a massive problem to do it the other way around? (Of course it would be providing we would be extra careful during the painting process.) Thank you to all in advance, Tim Re: order of floor polishing and painting/skirts 2Apr 28, 2010 1:56 pm It depends a bit on the sander, personally I prefer to get in before the kitchen and do a rough sand with the big belt sander (this levels the floor before the kitchen goes in) After the kitchen has been installed and before the skirting and kickboards have gone in, I think is the ideal time to get the floor sanded and finished. Having said that though, most sanders can work within whatever parameters you provide them. If you haven't installed the skirts yet, then no dramas at all. Assuming you are using primed MDF skirts then you can give them a coat or two before they are installed, then just give them a quick touch up afterwards. If the skirts are already down then no worries either, wait till the floors are done (and walls painted) then you can do them last. Just tape up the floor (my preference is the Blue painters tape) coat and No More Gap them as needed and then remove the tape as soon as possible. I am new to this forum so please bear with me.
