Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 17, 2010 9:57 pm We have chosen Amtico in rustic smoked wood for the majority of flooring throughout our house. I am after something that will not be as much maintenance as tiles or real timber floors, having 3 kids I don't want the floors to look dirty everyday and want to avoid that "I HAVE to mop my floors every 2 days so they look clean" scenario. I have read a lot through these forums about flooring types but there is not much talk of Vinyl wood planks, mainly laminate wood floors and quickstep etc.... We were quoted what I think is a pretty good price. I was expecting to pay extra for these floors over tiles but it seems it will cost us about the same. Why are most people here leaning towards laminate and in particular quickstep? Is there something I should know? I haven't really looked into these types. Any info or photos would be much appreciated! The only thing that worry's me is that they have agreed to lay over tiles with no extra cost. The single biggest factor in making vinyl planking look good is the condition of the sub floor. Have they outlined to you the amount of floor preparation they will need to do to prepare the floor? Amtico is not a cheap product, so i am assuming a quality installer will be used to fit your floors. I would double check on the the floor prep, especially over tiles, as this will require quite a substantial amount of work to smooth the grout lines out in the tiles to be acceptable for a resilient floor product. There is a thread on here regarding vinyl plankings, you can go through, viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17563. You will see i have commented on floor prep in there. Have a read, should give you an insight into what you can expect from your product. Re: Info on Amtico Vinyl Plank Flooring please? 3Apr 18, 2010 10:54 pm I went with Quickstep laminate as it's a product that has been well received in the consumer market. I didn't really consider vinyl mainly because I never looked into it - I wasn't sold on the idea either as I've seen some bad (probably cheap) jobs. Also, our concrete pad would need more work to prep it for vinyl than for laminate. Re: Info on Amtico Vinyl Plank Flooring please? 4Apr 20, 2010 7:37 am neorayez Amtico is top quality gear. Sorry neorayez, I should have said "I was expecting to pay extra for these floors compared to tiles". I think we are paying $37m2 (not including laying) for the Amtico which I think is very reasonable, so was worried these might be classed as "cheap" after reading about some people paying around $70m2. Our slab is being poured today so I hope it is good enough for the Vinyl... (the lady didn't even mention that the cost might vary depending on floor prep.... should she have?) Vundaful- thanks for your comment also! Can anyone comment on how Amtico compares to Karnedean which I have read lots about? I am really doing my head in wondering whether I am making a mistake and should just put down tiles! viewtopic.php?f=6&t=32803 Thanks Michelle Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=32574 Re: Info on Amtico or Karndean Vinyl Plank Flooring please? 6Apr 25, 2010 9:07 am Hi Michelle I have built three houses and used vinyl, either tiles or planks in all of them . I love the flooring, much softer and warmer than cermaic tiles, doesn't chip if you drop something. Doesn't split or swell if water gets on it, as the quickstep can do. Also much quieter than laminate timber floors. Is also the best flooring to use if you have underfloor heating as I do, living in a cold climate. I have used it in kitchen /family and hallway areas and only used carpet in formal living room and bedrooms. Amtico is a quality brand and they wear very well if they are looked after, most important is to stop dirt/sand being brought in, whcih will grind the surface. Hope this helps you, Deb Re: Info on Amtico or Karndean Vinyl Plank Flooring please? 7Apr 25, 2010 9:14 am Hi Michelle I have built three houses and used vinyl, either tiles or planks in all of them . Also if you don't mind would you please have a look at my other thread (in link in my last post) to give me your opinion on the colour I have chosen?? Thanks Michelle Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=32574 Re: Info on Amtico or Karndean Vinyl Plank Flooring please? 9Apr 25, 2010 9:54 am Hi Michelle this is a picture of the tiles in the house sold about two years ago. I have cut a little bit from one of the photos taken for the advertising. This is a bit of the kitchen floor, high traffic area and would have been down for 7 1/2 years at that time. Was still in perfect condition. I do have pictures somewhere I will find for you of the current floor which is a timber plank and the very first one I did which was a black/white marble pattern (looking back now that one was a bit dramatic, but the walls etc were very plain.) I like the colour you have but it looks very modern (my house is on a farm) and I am hopeless with colours anyway. Everything is bland beige.
