Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 25, 2010 11:16 am Hi team! We are doing some small reno on our unit and we have some traffic area's where the floor creaks. There is carpet on top at the moment and we are planning on removing the carpet and getting the floors polished. The property is well elevated so their is plenty of room to go underneath the house. The floors are in excellent condition. Before getting the floorboard guy in the sand and polish the floors i thought it would be good oppertunity to iron out the creaks. I wanted to ask what is the best recommended way to do this? So far i have read 1. Replacing bad nails with countersunk screws (filling on top) not sure if this is right and works? would it be noticeable when we polish the floors? 2. i have read some people mention to go underneath the house and do some sort of work but not exactly sure what the process is here. If any one can recommend anything would be great Cheers! Re: creaking area in floor (20 yr house - pine) 2Mar 25, 2010 10:16 pm Screwing down is only really used for the 'yellow tongue' type flooring in new upper storey builds, which then get covered with carpet. Take a closer look to find out if the movement comes from a warped board or a shrunken joist. Get someone to walk over the area whilst you are under the floor and see which joists may need small packers, once there is no more movement nail 'em down again (using different holes). Look closely (hands and knees type close) and then go from there. Likely causes: The boards are running up and down the nails. The tongue and groove have been removed to add boards and the boards are rubbing against each other The joists have twisted and the boards are moving against the joists. The nails have rusted out (black marks in the timber around the nails) and the boards are rubbing against each other or the remainder of the nail. Possible Fixes: Punch down nails with a nail punch Skew nail at the joists and board ends Talcum powder or other lubricant between the boards. Screw the boards down with smaller tek screws (not preferable because of the side of the hole left) Get a hold of a pneumatic t-nailer and renail floor Replace culprit boards Cheers CDC Housing Code 3 When to apply Floor Area external face of wall vs Gross Floor Area internal face of wall.
