Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 19, 2010 7:19 pm We ordered and put a deposit down on Readyflor Spotted Gum for the house we're building back in May last year... Had a phone call today today informing us there's a shortage Australia-wide of that particular size and timber, and we can't have the flooring installed until the end of May 2010. Absolutely livid that this has happened as we rang the flooring company as soon as we knew what date handover was and have been checking in with them for months. This now means we can't install our wool carpets (not cheap) until after the timber flooring has been laid. Which in turn means our built-in wardrobes won't be installed until everything is in (could be installed before carpet but not recommended). We could install the carpet but the dust created by the timber floor will float into the carpets which is less than ideal with an allergy-prone son. So my question is: what can we do to keep the dust down on the concrete floor throughout the house? Is there a cheapish way of sealing it? Roll on some paint? Or a clear lacquer? Would you just go ahead an install the carpet in the meantime? Absolutely furious! Pregnancy hormones and the stress of handover = not a good combination!!! Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 2Mar 19, 2010 7:55 pm You could paint on Bond-crete Cost is cheap, and application easy. (it is usually used to seal and prepare the surface) but may need to be re applied in high trafffic areas (no real problem) Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 3Mar 19, 2010 8:13 pm no do not use bondcrete! It is not moisture tolerant and will re-emusify and then any glue that is used will release from the concrete. You must use a crosslinked sealer. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 4Mar 19, 2010 8:25 pm Hi Roar, How terrible!! Anyway, just thinking - in case your floors are going to be glued down, you need to be careful about what sealer type you use (if you go ahead and seal the slab), since some sealants are incompatible with some glues. I guess a good starting point is to ask the timber installer if they are going to glue it and with which glue. They could even recommend a suitable sealer. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 5Mar 19, 2010 9:47 pm When we built about 14 years ago we had a similar situation. We lived on concrete floors in the areas we were saving to install timber in. We initially moved in without any floorcoverings and the dust from the concrete was a nightmare! We needed a quick fix and used bondcrete. A couple of coats did control the dust. We fitted carpets in the other rooms and lived on bondcreted concrete for several years. When we were ready to install the timber floors, we had to have the bondcrete removed by diamond grinding, then dried and sealed the floor before having the sheoak floors fitted. But it seems Onc knows more about concrete matters, so i'd say follow his advice! Good luck with it all! Ash. Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 6Mar 19, 2010 9:57 pm Not so keen on the idea of Bondcrete if it means potential problems after and having to remove it. What about just using a leftover paint on the surface? Like an exterior paint? Don't care what it looks like as long as the concrete dust is kept to a minimum. onc_artisan - pardon my ignorance but what is a crosslinked sealer? What would you recommend? Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 7Mar 19, 2010 11:47 pm Another idea would be Davco sealer (used as a primer prior to tiling and waterproofing) so shouldnt have any problems with your adhesive. The stuff we use in wet areas is blue however, so the colour may be a problem. Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 8Mar 20, 2010 10:26 am I don't like advertizing a product... but there are several types. Just PM me and I will let you know what I have found to be the best one Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 9Mar 20, 2010 11:55 am I rang a paint supplier today and they recommended using Duragard exterior paint (total cost $139) or paving paint. This may be a short term fix to get us through the next two months. Do you think either of these products will affect the Readyflor when it comes to installation? Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 10Mar 20, 2010 1:20 pm Roar I rang a paint supplier today and they recommended using Duragard exterior paint (total cost $139) or paving paint. This may be a short term fix to get us through the next two months. Do you think either of these products will affect the Readyflor when it comes to installation? Readyflor is a floating floor laid on underlay so paint or sealers wont affect it as its not glued down. Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 12Mar 20, 2010 2:10 pm Yes, Readyflor goes on underlay so should be no problem what we temporarily seal it with. As this is a temporary fix paint will be the cheapest solution. Still furious that we won't have timber but will go ahead and put carpet in before we move in. Apparently they'll come back and refit the carpet under the timber and it will be the same result. Don't believe their claims that there will be no dust as a result of the timber but will keep doors shut and use drop cloths over furniture to keep it to a minimum. Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 13Mar 23, 2010 11:37 pm As a finished board, the only dust will be from cutting. Just get it cut outside. The concrete will be painted with either paving paint or exterior paint, paid for by the flooring company. Carpet will be installed before the timber, with timber cut outside ensuring minimal dust. Timber will arrive in two months and be installed asap. Not how we envisaged our new house but will work out in the end... Thanks for all of your help! Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 16Mar 24, 2010 8:11 pm We lived with concrete floors in our last build for almost 2 years. Old fashion string mop and overload of water. slop it around and wash the floors thoroughly, rinse frequently, allow to dry and then repeat. do this twice for several days. then once a week ( more frequently if required) until you finally put your flooring down. we found this kept the concrete dust to a minimum and caused no long after effects. Re: No flooring, just concrete : ( Ideas to "seal" in meant 17Mar 24, 2010 8:17 pm great you came up with a solution the flooring company are happy with. I need to replace the worn mohair seal on my sliding window, but I can't get access to the end to slide the old one out & push the new one in. I could probably rip the old… 0 5870 4 15513 |
