Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 11, 2010 11:41 am hi everyone, I'm in the process of getting my timber floors installed. I bought the timber from big river, and found a subbie to install it for me. Now, i assumed that when he's doing the installation, that he would shave all the doors to fit the flooring. So i thought the price he quoted was for installation and of course shaving of the doors. He's in the process of installing the timber now and told me that they dont shave the doors, that's my problem to deal with. I asked whether he could do it, and he said that its going to cost around $300 to do the doors, but he's not even sure whether he's got time to do it. So now they might finish installing the floor and leave, which means all my doors are sitting in a spare room, not shaved so i cant hang it back onto the frame. Its also quite annoying that he didnt make me aware that i had to organise to get the doors shaved as he wasnt going to do it. So i guess my question is, is it normal for floor installers not to shave your doors. And if it is, who can I get to have my door shaved? Thanks everyone. Thanks, I didnt even know that. We didnt speak about it because he never mentioned it. And i didnt ask because I didnt know that it was an issue. I just assumed the installers dealt with it. Poor communication there. They should have nutted out things and discussed all this before they began. I see a lot of timber installations where they have not finished the edge of carpets properly and generally not offered a complete service. Which is pretty dumb. They might have done a perfect job of the floors, but then pi$$ed off their customers just because they didn't bother to properly manage all the peripheral issues, which they could have charged extra for. They lay timber.... Door cutting is almost always nothing to do with an install. Same as dishwashers etc. But the sales guy could have mentioned it to make it less of an issue on the day. I dont think they went through a shop they got there own timber then found a layer. The shops i work for have it on the contract but if we do a job and it is only 1 door i will do it but if its 10 doors i wont unless i get paid for it.The same with carpet you are right most guys wont do it i will do it.The way i look at it is i am not the cheapest out there i charge a bit extra so i give a bit extra. Re: Who shaves the doors when you are installing timber floo 7Mar 12, 2010 11:13 am Thanks guys for your opinions. I wouldnt have mind paying for it if i was aware that it was an extra. But i'm just annoyed at the fact that they didnt mention anything on the day. Now I have to organise to get the doors shaved. I just hope they are good enough to at least finish off the areas where the carpet meets the timber. I would be annoyed if they just left as it! It seems to me that if i had the know how and equipment to cut and sand down the doors once they are finished, i would probably have the tools and know how to lay the floor in the first place! I have been told that it can be quite difficult to cut a few cm's off the bottom of a door in a straight line. The door issue is even more worrying for us, because the doors both go to outside, so weather and rain will come straight in if it is a wet day.. Also, if there are architraves or door surrounds already down to the existing floorline apparently the guys who quoted for us have a machine to cut them away so that you dont need to remove them, but the skirting boards are a different issue and we will have to remove them all and put them back on again. I would have thought that all of these types of things would be thought of and carried out by the company you go with!?!? or am i being unreasonable? tc Re: Who shaves the doors when you are installing timber floo 9Mar 12, 2010 11:35 pm tcrosss Hi Wonderland, I was also surprised that this was not included in the process.
