Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 10, 2010 10:53 am Hi, I just need some advice. We are about 1 month away from our house being completed. We have started looking and getting quote on carpet. Now different carpet installers tell me different things... we had one trying to talk us into wool and another trying to talk us into Nylon. Now we can afford either, but when I say either we can afford a good quality Nylon and an average quality wool. We are starting to lean more towards a twist pile nylon carpet with a really good underlay but I was just after some opinions. We don't have any children as yet but they are on the agenda and we will be getting a dog. The carpet will be layed in all bedrooms (including study), formal lounge and hallway. Any suggestions would be a big help Re: Nylon or Wool Carpet 2Mar 10, 2010 11:18 pm Hi, Which part of the country do you live? Will the carpets be exposed to much sunlight? Do you want the same carpet throughout all of those areas, or would you consider having some carpets different in some rooms? Ash. The carpets won't be exposed to a huge amount of sunlight. Yes would like the same carpet throughout the house Re: Nylon or Wool Carpet 4Mar 11, 2010 10:09 am ok. Cooler climate makes me think you would benefit especially from the insulation qualities offered by wool carpets on Prime underlay. Wool will generally have better appearance retention throughout its life, but nylons can be very good as well. If you are going to care well for the carpets, the wool is my suggestion. Nylon may be a bit more forgiving in cases of spills and accidents, especially if you have a dog. But there are many varieties of both. So take your time and look at plenty of samples. Ash. Re: Nylon or Wool Carpet 5Mar 11, 2010 12:30 pm Am not an expert but here is my two bob's worth. We have 3 children - 4.5yrs, 2.5yrs and a newborn - that means lots of toilet training accidents / vomiting / food spills. Plus heaps of windows getting masses of light / sunshine during daylight hours. We chose solution dyed nylon mainly due to these factors. Love the fact that as soon as something is spilled it "balls" on the carpets surface - allowing me to clean it up with paper towels and then some cleaning products. I didn't want anything that would soak up spills before I get to them - which can be up to 10mins in some cases. It is soft underfoot, vacuums beautifully and suits our needs perfectly. We had woollen sisal carpet in the last house we lived in and whilst hardwearing wasn't very soft and showed some stains even after getting to the spills as quickly as we could. Just some food for thought when it comes to animals / small children - there will always be spills!! Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Nylon or Wool Carpet 6Mar 11, 2010 2:48 pm Sounds like you made a fair call there then Kyton! There can be issues with colour loss from carpets in coastal areas where atmospheric ozone can affect carpets, (both wool and nylon). This is where solution dyed fibres such as SDN may be a better option, especially if there is a lot of exposure to sunlight. I cleaned a house recently in Swanbourne (coastal area) with standard nylon carpets. You'd swear they had cream carpets throughout. But anywhere there had been furniture sealing off the floor (bookcases, chests etc) the carpet looked definitely pink. Beneath elevated furniture it still looked cream. Only areas with no exposure to atmosphere had a pink tone. SDN fibres are more resistant to fading and colour loss, but they still can fade in certain cases. I'd probably prefer wool carpets in JJ's case though. Ash. Re: Nylon or Wool Carpet 7Mar 11, 2010 9:16 pm Haha. How did I know Ash would suggest a wool ? That's cool. I have two carpet shops in Melbourne. Have sold the stuff, made the stuff etc for 18 years. I also have a Labrador and a Golden Retriever. I would suggest either a SDN or Smartstrand IQ150 only. You want to let your dog be a part of your family and if (more like when) it vomits or urinates on your carpet, you don't want to worry. Those two carpet fibres are not stressed by bleach. My lab had some "accidents" when he was a puppy - not a blemish. No discolouration. No worries. Both fibres are also fade resistent big time compared to 6 or 66 nylon and wool. SDNs and Smartstrand are BCF yarns so you don't get heaps of "fluff" on your carpet (or on your timber / tiles). Wool is good for flame resistence and for appearance retention providing you don't have accidents (or if you do you get to them quickly). I wouldn't waste my cash on a regular nylon, unless you were after a unique colour (the fibre is all made white and then dyed to suit, so they can make colours to suit various tastes in small runs ie bright reds, deep greens, purples etc..). If you are after a beige, taupe, brown colour (80% of sales are in these colourways), then go a SDN or Iq150. In saying that, if you wanted a unique colour and If you can wait 12weeks for shipping, the iq150 Smartstrand range has roughly 6 -700 colours to choose from!!! Just beware that SDNs are NOT stain proof. They have 15 year limited warranty that still exlude strong dyes etc. Smartstrand has the highest level of stain resistence of any carpet currently made, worldwide (lifetime stain warranty Inc redwine, mustard etc). Good luck JJ. 1 11004 1 15753 they can, it's a fairly standard solution when the slab isn't recessed. the falls need to be in the main floor, if it hasn't been done then you need to ask them to redo… 4 6584 |
