Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 03, 2010 8:31 am Hi, I was just curious what the carpet layers do with the edge of the carpet up against the floorboards. My parents have got vinyl and the edge of the carpet has the metal strip along it. Can someone please let me know how they do it? PHOTOS ARE MOST DEFINITELY WELCOME Re: When polished timber floorboards meet carpet.... 2Mar 03, 2010 9:10 am Well from what I have seen there is no edging, just the carpet ends and the wood starts. Re: When polished timber floorboards meet carpet.... 3Mar 03, 2010 9:31 am We have metal strips. About 2-3cm wide. Looks really good. They used a gold coloured metal. Our floors are a honey toned wood and beige carpet. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. That might make a difference! Floor boards went in first, then the carpet butted up against the strip. There had to be an edging over the edge of the carpet to hide the edge and stop it lifting, as the carpet was higher than the floorboards. I guess it would all depend on what the situation was! Thanks for the photo Stormy! Our floor is overlay solid hardwood floor in Blackbutt. Interesting if it would make a difference. Re: When polished timber floorboards meet carpet.... 7Mar 03, 2010 4:07 pm If you have flooring similar height or lower than carpet you would use a trim called a wall end if it is solid timber 18mm thick we router the final board to round it of then kick the carpet up to that. Re: When polished timber floorboards meet carpet.... 11Mar 03, 2010 8:56 pm You can ask them to lay an aluminium angle at the edge of the timber. It gives it a nice clean finish. If the carpet is higher than timber you will find it will wear at that spot in time. Also to concider is if timber expands in a large area in the width you can have up to 10mm expansion which may affect the carpet. With the timber you have i would use a trim. Re: When polished timber floorboards meet carpet.... 13Mar 04, 2010 9:08 am Well if I do need a trim I will probably get the thin strip.... it doesn't stand out as much which is the look we are after. But if I can I would like a strip at all. We are still in the process of getting our flooring completed, but I guess I will find out once all is done and we have decided on a carpet. Thanks for you help everyone!! Re: When polished timber floorboards meet carpet.... 15Mar 05, 2010 8:40 am Mark S You should discuss these options with the installer before installation, As changing trims after it's done is near impossible. [ without major cost to you ] Thanks Mark S I will do that when we are up to getting our carpet installed. [ without major cost to you ] Thanks Mark S I will do that when we are up to getting our carpet installed. I meant when the timber is installed. The wall end trim or the thin aluminium strip trim are done when the timber is installed. The base of these trims are under the timber, not carpet. The timber installer needs to know your preference of finish before he does the doorways. The Alum. angle can be put to the carpet side, but the timber installer needs it in place to correctly cut to it. A floating floor should not have this type of junction as there must be allowance for expansion/contraction of the timber. Re: When polished timber floorboards meet carpet.... 17Mar 13, 2010 7:13 am We are installing 14mm parquetry to the living areas and corridor and hallway. The parquetry is going directly on the slab, the timber floor will be higher at the point where it meets the tiles in the WC and bathroom. Not sure how we get around this, so they will be flush? Should I raise the tiles or will the timber installer know what to do at the time? appreciate your advice txs Re: When polished timber floorboards meet carpet.... 18Mar 13, 2010 7:26 am The best way is to screed the tiles to meet the levels, but this will cost extra. Alternatively you can install a strip across the two surfaces (which the timber contractor will do) - but I don't think this looks the best. If your flooring tiles are relatively thick, you may be able to get away with nothing. I have 15mm engineered timber floors, with an aluminium angle at the junction between the two surfaces. The angle was neat as you only see a trim a couple of millimetres thick, and the difference between the tiles and the timber is minimal. As the trim is in the middle of the doorway, you don't even notice the difference in height. I also caulked across the back of the trim when I caulked around the floor tiles.
