Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 02, 2010 5:37 pm Just wondering if anyone has decked out their house with iron bark grey as a timber flooring? I got recommended to use Raw Ironbark and then have it sanded and polish and apply supergloss on it. It suppose to be a really hard wood , hardwearing and good scratch resistance. Based on my research (and personal preferences) laying raw timber and than finishing it, will allow to achieve a smooth and seamless surface. Scratch resistance as a sole property of Grey IB (as well as any other timber) is just half of the truth -- it is the coating that will take the first hit of all attacks being animals, heals etc. I personally consider applying two coats of super-(ultra, whatever)-gloos type of finish (solvent based as I could not care less about the "green" fad - the amount of solid elements - this what matters the most) in order to achieve a very hard undercoat as well as to ensure that all natural timber feature is visible. The 3rd and final coat will be satin - just want to achieve more ambient look (I'm not a basketball player, so having a sport-hall feel inside the home is not something I'm looking to achieve) as well as most of discussions on the Internet say that footprints, dust and hair are not that visible on the satin-type of covering comparing to super-gloss... ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed. PM if you like. I got quoted about $107 a sqm for the whole job ( Timber+labour+sanding/polish+Gloss). Sounds very reasonable. I'm getting just timber and the G IB was at $42 per m2 (character grade - one that shows timber natural feature). To install I'm hiring a contractor at $60 an hour and the committed time to complete stands at the 4 days mark (this for the whole of my house which will require 350 m2 of floor to install). At this moment I'm intending to do sanding and coating myself. I might engage the contractor for the sanding as well - will talk to him later on. Coating I'm doing definitely myself. I'm yet to check the prices on the coating - just know that I will need to have 120 litres of stuff (3 coatings, approx 10 m2 per litre). ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed. I interested in buying for that price. Still costs money. However, yeah, comparing to your $107 I'm saving about 12K on my timber floor overall. Check there. Worth giving them a call - the page says G IB is sold out but they should be able to get more from their mills, like they did for me. http://www.northernriverstimber.com.au/ ... ecials.php ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed.
