Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Mar 01, 2010 3:39 pm Hi guys. Bit of a sticky one so please bear with me. We chose to install our own flooring (carpet to bedrooms and engineered/laminate to remainder). With this in mind I have asked our builder, Henley, what our options are for the skirting boards. They advise that they can either install them or leave them off and leave them on site for me to fit post handover. I then asked if we can have the carpeted areas skirted, because from my understanding they just stretch the carpet up to the tacking board up to the skirts. And leave the skirts for where we will be doing the boards on site. They are happy to this. I only relaised after the request that I will have an awful P.I.T.A trying to get the skirts to match up in height from where a boarded area meets a carpeted area. Is this the norm?? I then asked if they could install the skirts with 10mm clearance throughout, as this would be simpler to roll the carpet edge under and also allow room for the future boards. The answer was NO, we install flush to the concrete. Can anyone else share their experience with this. How did you guys get around it. I really do not want the flooring people to have to cut the skirts and the put quad in as I think it would look highly unatractive. All feeback truly appreciated Building Charleton 283 with Henley. All feeback truly appreciated Personally i'd be happy that they are allowing you to have partially fitted skirtings at all. (our builder doesn't). How many locations do you have timber meeting carpet? Are they corners? or do they meet along a straight piece of wall? At corners the change is less likely to be noticed, perhaps you could cut to an angle or add a section of bead? But if they meet along walls then it would look quite strange. In our case we're still undecided as to whether to fit the 'quad' to hide the join or whether to remove the skirtings, cut to height to match then refit. In your case, effectively if you wanted to cut them shorter to match, it probably wouldn't take that long with a table saw. Depending on your skills in the area. If the two areas meet, you can always cut down the skirting over the boards to line up with the skirting to the carpet areas. I put timber boards throughout my hallways so I wouldn't have the two floors meeting up. The skirting heights are different in the bedrooms (carpet) and the hallways (boards), but if I didn't tell you, you would never notice. I guess that is the simplest option. I even spoke to the flooring guy and he said if they are already cut to size he has no problem installing them for me. So I will let them know to go ahead with the carpeted rooms and I'll take care of the rest. Building Charleton 283 with Henley. We had the option of getting them tacked and not fitted .. but too much hassle of getting them re-fitted .. nailed .. plastered up and painted later on .. Good luck! --- I don't have a signature - just this sentence saying that I don't have one - that'll do! I did ask for that option, but Henley said they don't do that. Computer says noo Would have been much easier, but thems the breaks. Building Charleton 283 with Henley.
