Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Feb 17, 2010 7:19 pm Hi Guys, Looking for some advice on maintenance issues with different types of timber floor finishes, being a range from the "satin" to a "high gloss". Theoretically, I tend to believe that the high gloss finish will reflect lots of light and look just stunning. However, looking at my TV stand whose top is a tinted glass I understand that even a single piece of dust destroys the overall stunning effect and starts looking just yak. Another example would be an iPhone - slick and cool until greasy fingertips are seen on its body In comparison, my PC desk has an opaque glass and nothing is seen on it - not dust, not fingertips, nothing.. and yeah, after replacing my screen protector on the phone to an "anti glare" which is a bit opaque as well I tend no to clean up it 300 times a day Continuing such analogy towards flooring, somehow I tend to think that the same logic will apply and satin finish will hide such imperfections as dust and scratches much better. It is probably worth to mention that downstairs the timber is going to be darkish (grey IB) and upstairs quite light (tallowwood) - not sure if there any specific considerations for finishes in respect to different colours... I hard it difficult to compare tallowwood and blackbutt. IMO, the first one is much more superiour in all characteristics excluding colour which is, at the end, a personal preference Some quick googling identified that in standard application consisting of 3 coats, a good idea is to use two high-gloss levels and finish with the satin, or use high gloss, semi gloss and finish with satin. Applying 3 layers of satin is not recommended as it will obscure the timber natural feature as well as they say it is less durable comparing to the glossy ones... So, I think satin is on top.. What under - 2x high gloss or high-gloss + semi-gloss? ... built a Promenade with Clarendon. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=25104 20-10-09 - excavation and piering completed ... 12-04-10 - Basins fixed.
