timber grades?

Hi, Does anyone know the difference between the different grades of timber for floors? We are getting tassie oak and I thought it was meant to be B grade, however it has now arrived and it seems like there are many rough spots and marks on them.

I did go down to the timer place and the salesperson mentioned that there was only a 5% difference in the boards between A and B grade - so that it why we went with the B grade. Perhaps the builder has ordered C grade to save some money.. they do everything as cheap as possible i think!

This may help.

Speak to the SUPPLIER of the timber, not the builder to get an accurate description of the grades.

Following off hammerhead's link, the couple of suppliers we've looked at yet have all had select, standard and feature grades.
Going from least imperfections to most, also note wastage tends to increase as you go down as the likelyhood of a board being unusable due to a split or knot is higher.

Grading classifies appearance only. Grades are determined by visual inspection only. According to AU Standards there are something like three grades being character, standard and select and everything else seems to be a product by marketing teams. Character will have the biggest amount of natural feature in the timber while "select" - the smallest.
