Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 07, 2010 2:41 pm Hi all We're about to finalise our carpet selection and are 99% set on this carpet: http://www.cavbrem.com.au/tools/search- ... code=3008M Just wondering if anyone has come across this carpet before or had experience with any similar carpet? We think it 'ticks all the boxes' in terms of being hard-wearing as well as being soft and comfortable, etc but would love some advice or first hand thoughts! It may be 'just carpet' but we want to make sure we get it right as we plan on keeping it for the next 30 years or so Thanks! Adam Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 2Jan 07, 2010 5:00 pm Hmm - appears to be a shagpile. Although these appear to be making a bit of a comeback, I would hesitate. Being old enough to remember these being the rage in the 60's/70's I believe they dated quite quickly. Also, I suspect they are less than ideal in terms of practicality, especially appearance maintenance, cleaning etc. I guess it's the "keep for 30 years bit of your post" that rings the warning bells for me. If that was my intention, I would be very conservative/classic re carpet style. Just my 2c worth... Cheers zeke Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 3Jan 07, 2010 6:06 pm It looks lovely! Quite a few people on this forum speak very highly of the Cavalier Bremworth range, so much so that I have deliberately chosen my carpet from this supplier. I think you will be very happy with this carpet for years to come. It does state that it is shorter and denser then the 60's shagpile. I think it would be amazing underfoot. Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 4Jan 07, 2010 6:20 pm Although I too have some reservations about a carpet described as 'shag-pile' it appears to be a beautiful, fine quality wool carpet, and they have made it to give much better service than the old shag pile carpets. I'm sure it would feel sensational under foot! If you love it, go for it. I have no good reason to dissuade you! But of course, be sure to look after it very carefully. If its neglected, it would not have been a good choice. The important things are preventative strategies, to avoid getting soiling and stuff on/in the carpet, and a very good vacuum cleaner is ESSENTIAL. Then, be sure to only use a good Woolsafe technician at least every two years to clean & restore it. And of course, have some Woolsafe spotter on hand. To get good service for many years, choice of underlay and impeccable attention to quality installation is important. This starts with well secured, architectural smoothedge, premium underlay like PRIME, and an experienced installer who uses a power-stretcher. With all these elements coming together, you could expect to get 30 years of service, although it will be wearing a bit thin in high traffic ways by then. Enjoy! Ash. Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 5Jan 07, 2010 11:20 pm Thanks for all the responses guys!! To be honest, when we first saw the carpet and managed to get a sample and take it home, we had absolutely no idea it was a "shag pile" carpet - we thought it was a "plush" (which is what we originally were after) - it wasn't until I did a bit of research that I realised that it is in fact a "shaggy"! That said, after the initial hesitation in terms of how hardwearing etc it would be, I guess the fact that it's graded for 'extra heavy duty' and suitable for use on stairs gave me some confidence, along with Cavalier Bremworth having a pretty good rep in general! And yes, I can certainly vouch for the fact that, even a small square piece, sitting on a slab of concrete, does feel heavenly underfoot!! I'll certainly be taking all your comments and advice on board, hopefully it all works out well at the end of the day!! Thanks again! Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 7Jan 10, 2010 6:08 am Hi BuildingACT I just tried the link and it said the product is no longer available maybe its just my computer, can someone else try Mrs B Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 8Jan 10, 2010 7:18 pm Hi Mrs B Yes, I got the same result. However, if you then click on "search products" and go to Page 3, it's on the right hand side of that page. I must admit, my first reaction after a quick look was to remember shag-piles from another era. But this is apparently somewhat shorter and denser. Nice to see someone doing something different. It could be a great carpet. I'll keep an eye out for it out of sheer curiousity. It's not as shaggy as the 1960s version but certainly has a lot of wool. I absolutely love the feel of it from standing all over the sample at home! Hope you go ahead & then post some pics. Ours isn't being installed until October & I can hardly wait. Ours isn't being installed until October & I can hardly wait. Can I possibly ask if you've gotten a quote for this carpet?? We're so in love with this carpet, but the quote we received was a fair bit more than we were hoping If we still go with it, we'll end up having to cut the budget elsewhere....just trying to convince myself it's worthwhile, but not sure if the price we were quoted is "fair"! Appreciate the help Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 15Jan 19, 2010 11:37 am Well I would expect it to be a fairly premium price because it is a particularly thick dense pile wool carpet and CavBrem make their carpets with quality products. Considering it is probably twice the weight of other carpets, it should not be cheap. I'd expect a carpet like that to cost somewhere around $300 per lineal metre laid. I have heard that prices are a bit higher in the ACT. Don't know if that's the case. Try looking up other retailers near you via the CavBrem site, or call CavBrem. Ash. Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 16Jan 19, 2010 1:29 pm Haven't had ours measured up but indicative pricing is $100 sq. metre. May even have been slightly more. I am expecting this carpet if well cared for will last a v. long time so definitely think it's worth it. I am happy to wait for some other things if necessary. You know, i still cannot believe how cheap carpet is - even good quality wool carpet - compared to other floor coverings. I think some people pay that to get laminate "wood" floors laid. No wonder the NZ wool growers are apparently in trouble (this from the owner of the carpet shop). Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 17Jan 19, 2010 8:45 pm Thanks Ash/xquisite! That does make me feel a bit better We have been quoted approximately $340/lm (about $93/m2)...apparently this is the 'discounted price' I might have to see if I can haggle a bit more...but we do intend to stay in the house for at least the next 30years, so it would be nice to have a carpet we love that lasts just as long! Adam Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 18Jan 20, 2010 12:03 am Adam, here's a little exercise in comparing carpets (from the CavBrem range). I am very impressed with the site, as they provide good specs of all their carpets. ELYSIUM 18.2mm thick, 21 tufts per 10cm, 2370g/m2 ARMURE 11.4mm thick, 17.75 tufts per 10cm, 1530g/m2 ANGUS TWEED 10.2mm thick, 21 tufts per 10cm, 1420g/m2 TROJAN TWIST 10mm thick, 31.5 tufts per 10cm, 1630g/m2 So you can see that Alysium, being thicker and heavier than the others will be more expensive. Trojan Twist will be a very robust carpet, with good longevity, but won't feel quite as soft under foot. I have Angus Tweed in my main bedroom. After 13 years, its still looking good, but has some tracking/thinning out in the main walk-ways. Its probably still good for another 12 years. I looked at the Armure as a cheaper alternative to Elysium, as it has a similar look & feel, but not quite as heavy a carpet. Generally, you can expect the cost of each carpet to be proportionate with the weight figure (a 2370g carpet will cost much more than a 1420g carpet). Also, lower height, greater density carpets will generally last better, so of these four, the Trojan Twist may well last as long as the Elysium, but be cheaper. Cheers! Ash. Re: Cavalier Bremworth Elysium - any thoughts or experiences? 19Jan 20, 2010 12:23 am and further to that exercise of comparing apples..... I'm not suggesting this carpet, but check out the specs of this is an example of a full on commercial carpet... http://www.cavbrem.com.au/tools/search- ... e=503#null Lower, extremely densely tufted, and exceptionally durable carpet construction. When wool carpets are tufted so densely, they have excellent stain resistance too, as the tufts are so packed together that spills just sit on top and don't penetrate much into the pile. Ash.
