Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 03, 2010 12:24 am Hi Everyone, We are building a new house and thinking of putting timber floors through out the house. Do you recommend Solid Timber or Engineered Timber? What is better? Also do you recommend timber floors over the carpets for bed rooms? Please help. Thanks Re: Solid Tmber Vs Engineered Timber 2Jan 03, 2010 12:59 pm I'm planning my build at the moment and we'll absolutely be going solid timber floors like blackbutt. It's a pole home so it suits the style perfectly. We had been planning a slab and brick home in which case I would have gone for vinyl planks but why put down an imitation when you can fit the real thing for the same cost? Solid timber seems to have done the job alright in houses for the past hundreds or thousands of years so I think they'll do the job for me. I'm still undecided whether timber will be too cold in the bedrooms, I couldn't bear to cover nice timber with carpet so i'd either put in large rugs, or carpet over chipboard. Re: Solid Tmber Vs Engineered Timber 4Jan 04, 2010 7:41 pm Yes I'm aware of that, I was just saying that if I was going straight on slab then personally I'd just go vinyl planks over engineered timber and not have to worry about water damage, wear layers etc. Since I'm going straight onto joists I'd rather something that's going to last a lifetime if it's going to cost me the same price (or less). Re: Solid Tmber Vs Engineered Timber 5Jan 04, 2010 11:39 pm PVC planks would only cost the same if you went Amtico 1mil commercial grade and installed them with borders and went down over Masonite. In all other worlds, they will cost you at least Half the price compared to solids, and 25% cheaper than a floater. Not sure where you are getting your prices from.... Re: Solid Tmber Vs Engineered Timber 7Jan 14, 2010 1:14 pm I am floored that engineered timber can cost more than solid timber. I would go with solid timber every time over a veneer product. It's strange what fashions can do - similar to engineered stone costing more than real stone now, too. Crazy, IMO. With regard to the bedrooms, do you not have a preference? If you'll be living there just go with what you want in your own home. Personally, I have lived with both and much prefer carpet in the bedrooms. Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15819 Thanks Simon, I guess I'm no concerned with the volume of the noise rather that dead and hollow sound and feel that is associated with floating floors. But I'm not sure… 3 6068 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8251 |
