How could I move water based paint from my carpet? Already dried up.

What sort of carpet? Who painted the carpet? (painters or you or ???) Chances are, its best to get in a professional carpet cleaning technician. Ash. Re: Removing paint from carpet 4Dec 14, 2009 2:14 am No more info from Funfun! Well assuming there are some small suprficial spots to get off, I'll offer some help.... Methylated spirits is normally quite effective. It just takes a little time in contact with the paint to start dissolving it, and then you need to recover it. So, get some cotton wool, soak it with metho and sit it on the spot for 5 minutes. Then use a clean white absorbent cotton towel (nappies are ideal) to blot up the paint. Repeat until it is all removed. NOTES; Metho is FLAMMABLE! Use appropriate care. Metho is VOLATILE. Avoid skin contact or breathing the fumes. Keep well ventilated. DO NOT RUB or SCRUB carpet, especially if its wool carpet. DO NOT overwet the carpet with metho. Keep it just on the spot, as delamination of backing can occur. Keep it dry. Do not use water when working with solvents like metho. Call a professional if you are not having success. Ash. Re: Removing paint from carpet 5Dec 14, 2009 9:01 am Hi Royalblue How long since it happened? 7 months How much paint? (size & amount)? just a couple of marks here and there. It went through the sheet we put on the floor but some are as big a 50cent coin Did anyone try to clean it up (how)? We just did a carpet cleaning but one of those you hire from a supermarket (big mistake, I will start another topic on that one) What sort of carpet? Unfortunately I don't know. It was already in when we moved in. Who painted the carpet? (painters or you or ???) We did. Thanks Re: Removing paint from carpet 6Dec 15, 2009 12:06 pm Funfun, After that time, it has well and truly set and become a part of the carpet! Anything that may dissolve the paint will work slowly and then the emulsified paint needs to be removed carefully. This is a slow paint-staking process, and doing so without causing some pile distortion is not easy. You will need not just a carpet cleaner, but an experienced stain removal specialist to sort it. But here's the question.... you will pay for the time & expertise of a good technician. Is the carpet worth spending the money on? You should think about the overall condition and value of the carpet, and whether its worth restoring or replacing it. Ash. Re: Removing paint from carpet 8Dec 16, 2009 4:24 pm I have a similar problem and was going to try "Goof Off" which can be bought in Bunnings. I am going to do a test patch on an off-cut of carpet first, as I am worried it might remove some of the colour in the carpet or leave a stain. Re: Removing paint from carpet 10Mar 15, 2010 9:18 pm Sorry to bring up an old thread, but thought it was better than starting a new one the same. My DH dropped paint on our brand new wool blend (80/20) charcoal carpet (Victoria Carpets Tullibrook I think) while painting the ceiling in my daughter's room. There are several drops but none larger than a 5 or 10 cent piece. I discovered it yesterday, but it could have been there for a week or two under he drop sheet. DH tried to clean it with a stain and glue removal product which seemed to work mostly, but has left 'oily' remains. I tried to use our preen vanish foam which, again improved it but not perfect. I would say there would have been a fair amount of rubbing with the first cleaner too. Does anyone have any advice on how to remove the remaining stain? It was water-based ceiling white to start with. Thanks in advance Re: Removing paint from carpet 11Mar 15, 2010 11:18 pm Hmmm, I'm afraid it sound like there may already be damage due to inappropriate action when trying to remove the paint. Rubbing and scrubbing wool carpet can cause felting and pile distortion. Whilst the paint can be removed, the pile distortion may be permanent! This is why its so important to understand correct stain removal procedures such as advised by the Woolsafe Organisation. See www.woolsafe.com.au You could try using a Woolsafe approved carpet spotter, but you must stop rubbing the carpet. Gentle blotting using absorbant cloth such as white cotton towel is sufficient to recover the residues. If unsure, its best to get in a Woolsafe technician, who can rinse out the chemical residues, and may have some tricks up his sleeve to undo the damage. Sounds like a nice quality carpet so please learn to treat it correctly! Ash. Re: Removing paint from carpet 12Mar 16, 2010 7:00 am Thanks for your response, Ash. It does look a bit fuzzy where my Dh has rubbed it to get the paint out, which is a shame as it is lovely carpet. Being in my daughter's room, it will probably be disguised by 2 year old's stuff, but I'll know! Where would I find an approved woolsafe techinician in my area? I'm in Melbourne. ETA, Sorry should have looked at the link first There is one on the woolsafe website that is in my area. Re: Removing paint from carpet 14Mar 16, 2010 11:20 am Thanks Ash, unfortunately I am a long way from Michael. I have spoken to another company that is in my area and their advice is to leave it for now and he thinks any remaining stain should come up next time I get them cleaned. They are flat out at the moment after all the storm damage around here, but he doesn't think leaving it will make it any worse. Said not to try and clean it with anything else in the meantime though. Thanks again for taking the time to respond Re: Removing paint from carpet 15May 31, 2010 2:44 pm Hi Everyone. I just want to let you know what I ended up doing. Given the fact that my carpet is not brand new (and is pretty ugly too ) And that I only had a couple of drops here and there I just used the scissors. As the paint is actually on "top" of the fibers I've separate thye fibers as much as I could and I just cut the top of the fibers to get rid of the paint. Now I'm guessing that this is not a great method on a new carpet or for BIG spots nor for paint that really got into the carpet. Re: Removing paint from carpet 16May 31, 2010 6:55 pm Funfun, Yes in certain cases, trimming the paint off the tips of the pile is a simple and effective way of removing paint. But you are right, it is not appropriate where paint has gone into the pile or larger areas. I carry a pair of duckbill carpet napping shears on every job. I use them to carefully clip/trim off some contaminants from certain carpets. If carpets are very smooth and a uniform height, it may produce a very obvious hole, which isn't good. But if paint is just on the tips, and the carpet has a busy design or variable height, its not so conspicuous.
