Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 16, 2009 5:40 pm Hi, I am in the process of looking at floor covering for the kitchen/family room. Thanks Vincy Re: Timber floor and tiles in one room ? 2Oct 16, 2009 5:47 pm It can look fine depending on the tiles. Are you building on a slab or piers? The main thing to overcome will be achieving the same finished floor height between the two Re: Timber floor and tiles in one room ? 3Oct 16, 2009 5:56 pm Hi, Have a look at some of the houses on this site http://www.cleverdesign.com.au/bluestone.html . Re: Timber floor and tiles in one room ? 6Oct 16, 2009 6:19 pm What sort of timber floors are you having ? If you are using an engineered type floor, which is about 15mm thick, then the tiles will line up with it. If you are using thicker floor, then you could always build the tile base up to match. Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Timber floor and tiles in one room ? 7Oct 16, 2009 6:53 pm Overlay flooring is 12mm/13mm thick and can be laid directly onto the slab ( with a watreproof membrane installed) whilst tiles and bed will be around 8mm. Re: Timber floor and tiles in one room ? 8Oct 17, 2009 2:45 pm So you want floorboards generally, but tiles in the kitchen? Why? In my mind, floorboards would be preferable in the kitchen too, so why not just continue them into the kitchen? In kitchens, you can have pots & pans dropping, and tiles can crack & chip. With floorboards, they might dent, but can be filled and refinished with the rest of the floor. Grout will take some cleaning from time to time too. Another option is to have cork in the kitchen, offering some cushion, which can be much kinder on those who spend lots of time cooking etc. Its a nice resilient surface that can blend well with your hard floors. Much better than tiles in my book! But of course, its your place, so do as you wish! Ash.
