Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 16, 2009 3:02 am Go into any carpet store these days, and the sales staff are PUSHING SDN (solution dyed nylon) carpets. As I've said before, there are various quality SDN carpets on the market, and many don't live up to their marketed claims. There are some very good SDNs, and I have been getting some in depth info recently from experts, and have had a tour of a large carpet mill that makes SDN and other carpets. So I have learned about the manufacturing processes more fully. Generally, you should not believe claims of stain resistance too readily. The fact that they have colour added in the mix before the fibres are extruded means they have better colour stability (resistance to fading) than other nylons, but they often are not as resistant to staining. To have good resistance to staining, they need to have stain blockers and treatments like Teflon applied at the mill. Not all makers of SDN carpets do. Also, some do not scour the carpet after it is tufted, which can lead to soiling issues because of contamination of the carpet with spinning oil. Here is a bit of info... http://www.northstatecarpets.com.au/fil ... tioned.pdf It is impressive technology! If you want a SDN carpet, I would suggest looking at those made at this mill. And furthermore..... Northstate make some carpets using a new generation polypropylene yarn called Sensitex 6000. It has a really nice soft hand and has some excellent qualities. It has better stain resistance to SDN, and is just as soft. I really like this carpet! http://www.northstatecarpets.com.au/products.asp?id=61 It should be looked at before you go for a SDN in my opinion. It is sold through Solomons as the 'Suzie Wilkes collection' party proof carpet. Ash. Re: SDN carpets are not all alike! 3Oct 16, 2009 7:18 pm CarolineJ Yippeeee! That's what I was planning on getting (Suzie Wilks- Vogue/Panache). Love having the Ash seal of approval Well how could I resist the combination of nice soft carpets and Suzie Wilkes! I saw this carpet being made at the Northstate Mill a few days ago. BUT it seems there are different carpets made by other manufacturers in the range. Have you got the specs for the particular carpet you are planning to get Caroline? The one I saw is made with Sensitex 6000 (polypropylene) yarn in a LCL style (level cut & loop). Its is sold as "new generation partyproof" carpet, and I would expect it to be much less than $250 per lineal metre. Ash.
