Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 15, 2009 10:07 pm This may be a dumb question. ............... But if I intend to get new skirting should I remove the old skirting before the floor boards are done so that the new skirting can go on top of the floor boards once finished? I saw some floor boards today that had an extra 'bit' in between the floors and the skirting. I don't know what/why this was for. It is something I hadn't thought of until now. My friend told me that the man that does my floorboars will "finish it off" at the walls - I wonder if this 'extra bit' is what she was talking about. Which means I should have the skirting done before I get him in to do the floors. Or have I made it more confusing than it needs to be? Re: skirting and floorboards 2Oct 16, 2009 9:23 am if you're ripping the skirts out, lay the boards first and then put the new skirts on top of the boards. if you were to lay the boards to the skirts, you'd need to leave an expansion gap (~10mm) between the skirts & boards. to fill that gap you'll use some quad (which you referenced above). its more aesthetically pleasing to have the skirts sitting on top of the boards, looks so much better IMO! speak to your floor guy, i'm sure he'll want to do the job without the skirts as it will probably be easier for him.. you'll then need a chippy to install your new skirts. good luck and post up some pics Re: skirting and floorboards 3Oct 16, 2009 9:39 am The extra 'bit' is also referred to as beading. If you have the opportunity to avoid it by removing your skirting boards, laying the new floorboards and then having your new skirting fitted - do that. It will look so much better. The beading will always make the job look like it was a retro-fit. Re: skirting and floorboards 4Oct 16, 2009 7:04 pm Thanks guys. The boards are already there - they are the original boards. But I am getting them sanded and polished. I think I will go ahead and remove the current ones - which half of them are off (after removing walls) or chipped. Then get him to sand and polish the boards and then get someone to put in the new ones. It is logical but with all the renovations and decisions and trying to arrange tradies I get in a head spin. Joe Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. If you haven't sorted this already you need to caulk this gap. Not sure where you are but if you are in Sydney I can… 5 4335 4 6010 7 2996 |
