Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 06, 2009 12:29 pm Hi all, So i think we have decided to have floorboards again as opposed to large polished porcalain tiles as we originally wanted, however im so confused by all the different kinds that i have no idea what the product i want actually is! So ill try and explain it here and if someone could tell me what it is and the approx price that would be great. I have been to a number of carpet/flooring places and they dont seem to know what im on about. We would like the really glossy looking floors, in a darker red/golden type colour. Dont want the light ones. However when looking in the shops nothing looks as glossy as the pics i have seen on here. One of the sales people said that the timber laminate flooring would be better with kids and a dog as it would be more scratch resistant? Is this correct? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Vanessa Re: So confused by floorboards choices....please explain. 2Oct 06, 2009 1:09 pm Sorry Vanessa, I can't help you with your question but I just wanted to say that I agree with you. The timber floating floor all seems to have the matt look to it. I love glossy floors too. Maybe you can get a gloss put over it after it's installed??? Re: So confused by floorboards choices....please explain. 3Oct 06, 2009 1:46 pm Hi all the sand, I am a big fan of wood floors. I have had them in all my builds and will never go back. This is a great website for looking at colours and types.....don't get to caught up in weather one scratches to much more than another, IMHO they all scratch and all mark but as I see it that is why you have timber for its individuality and imperfections. Your scratches blend and make your flooring unique. I am in no way saying take a knife and make scratches where you can but just to expect to see living marks. I have found the glossier the easier to scratch but it looks amazing. We have had the most comments on the floors with the higher gloss level. So, find a colour you like and start researching a company you want to use then decide on the level of gloss. Check these guys out anyway. http://www.solidhardwoodflooring.com.au/gallery.html Re: So confused by floorboards choices....please explain. 4Oct 06, 2009 8:56 pm personally, if you like a wooden floor then I would never go for the laminate. Our friends have it and you can tell its fake and to me it looks cheap . We have gone for coffee strand woven bamboo 13mm thick boards. While its not your traditional hardwood floor its not plastic. Once its in I can tell what its like, but you would have made your decision by then Blog: http://funmore-residence.blogspot.com/ Forum: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=21109 Construction Start - 19/09/09 Slab Poured - 21/10/09 Frame Completed - 25/11/09 Lockup - 22/12/09 Fixing - 22/02/10 Handover & Moved In 30/04/2010 Re: So confused by floorboards choices....please explain. 5Oct 06, 2009 10:54 pm Hey maxyb, that is exactly what are going with. I love floor boards. After ripping up the carpet and finding they go through the entire unit -my decision was made. (except bathroom and toilet). I am hoping my turn out ok once sanded and polished. Hoping they are not too light. Was wondering if I should darken them to match the colours I have seen in photos (see all these beatiful photos), but then thought I should keep them in their original state (well still polishing them). They have lots of 'knots and imperfections' that I just love. My flloor board is giving me a datet tomorrow as to when he can sand an polish. So again the waiting game for the tradie to do his job. He not only sands and polishes but I am sure it lays boards as well. From memory I dont think you are in Vic are you? Otherwise I would give you his name/no. Good luck with your decision making. Re: So confused by floorboards choices....please explain. 7Oct 07, 2009 8:36 pm hi all, thanks for the responses! I know i want the nice glossy ones but dont know how im supposed to acheive this look. Am i supposed to get the timber board things and then get someone to sand them? When i was asking in the carpet/floorboards shop they said they hadnt had anyone do this and it might void the warrenty? I found some laminate floorboards that looked quite glossy but i dont think thats what others on this forum have used to get these nice shiny floorboards i have seen on here. Ohh think i might have to go to a specialist floor board place, mind you have plenty of time to research flooring options i suppose! V Good option, timber floors are definitely a specialist area. What are you starting from? New build? Existing subfloor? I wouldn't do it with laminate. Nasty. I have kids who like to drag furniture and G-d what else around Vanessa, we had to choose practicality over looks, and so far bamboo is looking to be best priced in our area I spoke with my builder this morning and he said you can use a special wax on bamboo floors and it hides most scratches, but he did say its hard to scratch the floors and that once the installers are finished cutting the planks they have to throw the blades out as the bamboo is so hard Blog: http://funmore-residence.blogspot.com/ Forum: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=21109 Construction Start - 19/09/09 Slab Poured - 21/10/09 Frame Completed - 25/11/09 Lockup - 22/12/09 Fixing - 22/02/10 Handover & Moved In 30/04/2010 Re: So confused by floorboards choices....please explain. 10Oct 08, 2009 4:09 pm Youo need to get real timber floors. Then they will need to be sanded and a full gloss put on them. Hey presto, beautful, shiny floors. None of this laminate rubbish! Re: So confused by floorboards choices....please explain. 11Oct 08, 2009 9:00 pm I never thought floorboards could be so confusing.......i swear there is just too much choice with everything, three choices thats all you should get it would make life so much easier (i mean my local supermarket has a whole isle of different toilet paper! surely thats to much choice). Bev can i ask where you got your floorboards from and an approx cost? I notice you are in adelaide so am i! Thanks, Vanessa Re: So confused by floorboards choices....please explain. 12Oct 08, 2009 9:19 pm The prefinished timber floors these places are talking about all come in a satin finish. Yes you can have them sanded back and repolished to achieve the glossy look but you dont want to be sanding them back until you need to or you will reduce the life. You will get the best advice by caller a floorboard layer - not one of these larger companies. That way you can go to a timber place (and I mean a large timber warehouse, not a flooring company), pick out the floorboards you want and have the installer apply the level of gloss you want. It also works out cheaper to cut out the "middle man"

Thanks, Vanessa It can be a bit overwhelming but stick with it until you find what is right for you. I got my floors from Baltic Pine & European Timber 1-16 Bedford Street, Port Adelaide. I highly recommend them. They have a great showroom and are very helpful. They will even take you into the warehouse to look at all the raw timber! My parents, brother and myself have used them in our houses. I chose Karri timber floors (only just started laying them this week, there are a few pictures in my blog in my signature) Just for the timber it cost $1110 for 35m2. Then add on a few tubs of liquid nails. I am laying these myself so saving on installation costs however i will get them sanded and polished professionally which will be about $25 per square metre. I initially was looking at laminate floors too, but anything half decent was $80+ so for that kind of money i thought, why wouldn't i get the real thing. I think real timber adds a lot of value to a home. However when looking in the shops nothing looks as glossy as the pics i have seen on here. What I believe you are looking for is wood floor that you like the colour of and then have a polyurethane gloss on top. This gives the high gloss you are looking for. It really isn't too confusing. Find the wood, have it laid, then get an expert to put on the gloss. http://www.duspec.com.au/duspec/file/AUDD0150.pdf Check out this page for Dulux info on it. http://www.borthwickfloors.com.au/appli ... rials.html and this one which shows the different treatments.
