Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 05, 2009 2:12 am I'm going to Qld in a few days. Flying to the Cold Ghost to do a course with the Woolsafe Organisation to become a Registered Carpet Inspector. Dunno what that means, but I'm gonna be one! Meeting with Col Nation and the world's leading authority, Dr Eric Brown to find out lots more stuff. Also having a tour of a carpet mill, and doing some networking with other carpet techs. So I will be scarce for a while. Cheers! Ash. http://www.carpetinstitute.com.au/downl ... course.pdf Re: I'll be off for a bit! 4Oct 05, 2009 10:41 am Have a great time! (Could you maybe pick their brains about how to hasten the airing out of the smell of plastic (maybe PVC?) from wool carpet? I left something in somewhat smelly packaging sitting in a corner for months and I can still smell it when I put my nose close to the carpet. So angry with myself. ) Re: I'll be off for a bit! 5Oct 05, 2009 3:35 pm Odour issues is one of the things covered on the course. Are you saying that the wool carpet has accepted an odour from another source (the plastic item)? I think I have the solution..... DO NOT put your nose close to that section of carpet! Ash. Re: I'll be off for a bit! 6Oct 05, 2009 3:49 pm Macy, If the smell is bothering you, get a bottle of Whitely's Fabrisan to spray the area with. Should fix it (along with a bit of airing). I think Godrey's might sell it. Or if your carpets have not been cleaned in the last year or two, get in a good carpet tech to clean & deoderise it for you. Ash. Re: I'll be off for a bit! 7Oct 06, 2009 7:58 am Hi Ash, You won't be dissapointed. This course will give you further abilities to be able to help the people on this forum as well as help manufacturers solve some of thier issues as well. Shall I throw in another surfboard for you? cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: I'll be off for a bit! 8Oct 06, 2009 8:16 am Macy , is it a wet sheep type smell, mildew smell or something else? Wool has the ability to trap gasses and odours. It's one of it's many characteristics. It's natural absobency helps it absorb polluting gasses and airborne soils. This is great because it helps clean the air. As an example of this, I was speaking last night with a Woolsafe Certified Operator in Rockhampton and he told me that the chief maintenance engineer from the local airport said that the only time in the last few years that they didn't have to clean the Air conditioning filters was in the month following when he cleaned the carpet. The operator then vacuumed a section of carpet using his upright vacuum cleaner and showed the volume of soil that was removed from a small section of carpet. This displayed that the general cleaners were not being effective in thier vacuuming and it is now time for some specialist help again. So wool will absorb these gasses and soils, removing them from the air that we breathe. We end up with cleaner indoor air. The wool carpet and even nylon carpets to a lesser extent, help keep the air cleaner by acting as a filter. But any filter needs to be cleaned periodically to keep it filtering. As Ash says, It might be time to call in a professional. but if it is in just one section then try cleaning it with some "Carpet Power" available from your supermarket. It is the only product on supermarket shelves that is WoolSafe Approved. There are some other spotters that are available from some commercial cleaning suppliers. Johnson Diversey have thier "All Purpose spotter" and Research products make "Unbelievable". Prochem make 'General purpose spotter". all are WoolSafe Approved. The "Unbelievable' will more than likely be easier to source from a cleaning shop as they have distributors right across Australia. But Carpet power is in your supermarket. Just try cleanig the section first which will tend to remove residual chemical odours. follow the directions on the bottle, and if you are still having problems then try calling a good carpet cleaner. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: I'll be off for a bit! 9Oct 15, 2009 1:16 pm Thanks. I'm worried if it is PVC then the smell might be phthalates. All these years I've tried to make intelligent choices with products but I let my guard down because the product was supposedly eco-friendly and it was just the packaging. I hope you had a good time Ash. Hi, we live in an area where the black soil is prone to a lot of movement. We have an old 50's house with masonite everywhere and nails popping out, warping, rusted etc.… 0 4499 I couldn't attached the photo for some reason.
