Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 29, 2009 8:21 pm Just wondering what ppl are using to seal decking timber - we have 90mm tallowood. I know, Luke, you like the Sikkens Cetol HLS product. My OH went to buy some today & had this product recommended to him: http://intergrain.com.au/exterior.html but I have not heard of it before. Thanks HH Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Sealing Decking Timber 2Sep 29, 2009 9:53 pm If you mean the Ultradeck its a water-based decking oil, its been on the market about 2 years, we sell it at work. We tested it on a fully exposed deck, it lasted a few months more than a traditional solvent based decking oil. It has the obvious benefit of quick dry times and easy wash up Make sure you wash the tallowood first with a timber cleaner, its a very oily timber so you want the best adhesion possible Re: Sealing Decking Timber 3Sep 29, 2009 10:19 pm Thanks, Luke. So would you recommend it over the Sikkens? Yes, we will be cleaning the tallowood first. I understand that the cleaner also actually bleaches the timber somewhat. How can we ensure that all of the decking will be 'bleached' to the same degree? We have alot of area to do, so will be tackling it in stages. The main thing is to wash it all off before coating, a pressure washer is ideal. Ultradeck is not bad for a water-based product, I would not really compare it to solvent based Sikkens products though. Spa'N'Deck is another water-based product that gets good reviews. Re: Sealing Decking Timber 5Nov 11, 2009 8:09 am I know they say dont thin the Sikkens products, but could you thin the Sikkens Deck Plus for the first coat and then apply undiluted for the last 2 coats? (just wondering what the difference is between Sikkens HLS and Sikkens Deck, as the latter just seems to be a thicker version of HLS) Re: Sealing Decking Timber 6Nov 11, 2009 6:10 pm The opposite of what your suggesting is needed if using CetolDeck on hardwood, in that it requires two base coats of Cetol HLS before a final coat of Cetol Deck. Cetol Deck can be used as a tand-alone on softwoods. You don't need to thin down Sikkens as its already a very thin liquid. Re: Sealing Decking Timber 11Nov 20, 2009 3:49 pm HI Just a question to add to the thread, how big is the market in Australia for deck/wood stain restoration ? What are the prices like, seem very expensive to me and what is there for restoring cedar and kwilla that isnt a oil/solvent based product that doesnt blacken with age ? Very interested have another solution/product not on the Australian market Re: Sealing Decking Timber 12Nov 20, 2009 6:28 pm There are plenty of products that don't blacken with age like traditional oils. Sikkens, Flood Company, Intergrain to name a few manufacturers.
