Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Pics of NSW Spotted Gum timber floors anyone????? 2Sep 22, 2009 1:08 pm NSW spotted gum is not really any darker than coastal blackbutt. I don't generally class blackbutt as a light floor, IMO its closer to a mid tone. If you want a darker floor look at Qld spotted gum,Qld blackbutt, grey ironbark, sydney blue gum etc. I did have a pic of a NSW spotty floor, I'll see if its still in my pics Re: Pics of NSW Spotted Gum timber floors anyone????? 3Sep 22, 2009 1:13 pm http://www.woodstockflooring.com.au/files/imagegallerymodule/@random47995196e48af/gallery9/PF_SpottedGum.jpg and coated... http://www.ajfloors.com.au/Spotted%20Gum.JPG The timber may be darker if it has come from northern NSW Re: Pics of NSW Spotted Gum timber floors anyone????? 4Sep 22, 2009 8:05 pm Dukekamaya http://www.woodstockflooring.com.au/files/imagegallerymodule/@random47995196e48af/gallery9/PF_SpottedGum.jpg and coated... http://www.ajfloors.com.au/Spotted%20Gum.JPG The timber may be darker if it has come from northern NSW It looks quite yellow in that second pic... Is that just the type of coat?? I think what I meant when I said 'darker' is that I'm after something warm and brownish (not too dark) and Blackbutt seems a bit more on the cream/light brown side. Im in Northern NSW and will be getting my timber from Tweed Heads. Also, can anyone tell me what the difference between oil based and water based coats? Do the boards end up with a different look? Does one last more than the other? Re: Pics of NSW Spotted Gum timber floors anyone????? 5Sep 22, 2009 9:08 pm A solvent based finish will bring out the colours and grain much more strongly, giving a honey or yellow look to many timbers. A water based finish gives a totally clear finish. Some prefer this whilst some find it a little bland. Its purely a person choice. Some modern water based polys use a solvent based primer which gives you the stong colour and grain without the yellow look. I have blackbutt with tung oil against near white walls. In that setting it looks like a dark blonde to light brown. If so what were the "special circumstances" under which it was granted?
