Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Flooring for second story 2Sep 09, 2009 8:48 pm Hi Becdoll, I will be watching this with interest as we are most likely going with polished concrete on the lower floor, but we are undecided as to the upper level - it will be too expensive to try and do concrete upstairs - do we go tiles? wooden floors? We will be having carpet in the bedrooms, so it will really only be for the hallway. Our concern being introducing too many different materials.... Building on the Sunshine Coast - Land settled 22nd July 2009 Building contract finally signed (after much deliberation on our part) 11th November 2009 Building commences 25th January 2010 - small local builder End of June - almost completed fit out 26th July - MOVE IN DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: Flooring for second story 3Sep 09, 2009 9:26 pm Hi, I guess you are concerned about the noise factor of having timber floors upstairs? Any other considerations? What sub-floor materials will the upstairs floor be made from? A well chosen carpet and underlay will certainly have many qualities that make it a "definite maybe" Another surface you may not have considered would be CORK floors. In many ways, more friendly than timber, less expensive and has most of the benefits of hard surfaces. Ash. Re: Flooring for second story 5Sep 10, 2009 9:59 pm Generally bedrooms are on the 2nd floor, so I would always go carpet. That being said if you want timber just make sure you stuff the sub floor with some insulation to help reduce the noise transfer of people walking on the floor. I have a timber floor to my ground level, which sits over a lower level (sloping block). Before the lower ceiling went in I stuffed it with insulation and although it doesn't stop all the noise, it does a fantastic job compared to doing nothing at all Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Flooring for second story 6Sep 10, 2009 11:03 pm Similar situation here, we're going tiles for the ground floor and carpet on the upper floor with insulation between the floors to minimise noise transfer. Handover - Aug 10 Re: Flooring for second story 7Sep 11, 2009 11:54 am becdoll Is wood really impractical for second story flooring? Hubby seems to think carpet is the only way to go. I need more options! hehehe... Would love your thoughts and experiences. Thanks. Totally practical! There are heaps of options and heaps of previous threads on this. Questions: 1 - why not have wood? You can clean it better than carpets... 2 - Sound transfer a concern? Can be dealt with... 3 - What is the flooring to sit on? progress viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20401 sculptures viewtopic.php?f=36&t=26607 pole trouble viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25988 Re: Flooring for second story 8Sep 11, 2009 2:55 pm totally practical? wrong! All floor-coverings have pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses. Timber flooring certainly has its virtues, but there are plenty of good reasons to have another surface upstairs. Then there are the actual stairs. A hard wearing extra heavy duty wool carpet is the most practical for the stairs. Ash. Re: Flooring for second story 10Sep 11, 2009 9:54 pm royalblue  totally practical? wrong! In what way is it impractical? The noise issue is dependent on how it's installed, your floor plan, your own tolerance to noise, your habits in wearing tap shoes around the house. It's a warm hard surface that doesn't split your 2yr olds head open when he falls over and doesn't stain when he spills his drink. Your legs don't ache after you walk on it in bare feet for 2 hours. It can be re-polished for a spruce up in 10 years. It's not too noisy to walk on in my book. You can run a microfibre cloth over it to pick up dust. It looks beautiful. You may prefer to have the same flooring through the house. These things are all practical. Thats not too say that you shouldn't think about carpet also - but I don't think you should be chased away from timber as an option because of noise. I should declare my vested interest - I have some timber (hall and upstairs sitting) and some carpet (bedrooms and media) upstairs. And the noise thing is not relevant. I would be minutely more concerned if we had bedrooms down and living up, because the last thing you want to do is wake kids downstairs by tap-dancing above their heads. But even that I'm sceptical about. Hi, We have a single story MacDonald Jones house, on a waffle pod slab with steel frame. Are we able to build a second story extension?
