Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 27, 2009 12:45 am Hi, I have a question- we have bought porcelain rectified edge tiles, and have a really cheap quote by a tiler who will lay them without screeding the floor. the house is brand new, and this quote will save us heaps. has anyone had rectified edge tiles laid without the screeding done? does it look level, and able to keep the grout small (1mil width)? or would you definetly recommend screeding? thanks! Re: Screed floor- porcelain rectified edge tiles 3Aug 27, 2009 11:24 am Rectified edge tiles will magnify any imperfections in the floor levels. You've spent good money on rectified edge tiles so why skimp on having the tiling done properly - you will never be able to fix it afterwards and will regret that decision. Re: Screed floor- porcelain rectified edge tiles 4Aug 27, 2009 12:59 pm SCREED SCREED SCREED Its a must with rectificated tiles. I sell rectificated floors but only after stressing to my clients about the preparation required. Laid 100% right rectified tiles look amazing with a seamless looking tile joint, and the illusion of a smaller joint as it is closer to the surface. But done 90%right...well do I need to say more. With this type of edge you can not humour the tile for any imperfections in floor level - your starting point must be like a billard table-FLAT and true as possible. Any exposed edges can be easily seen and felt under foot, and as they are a highly stressed edge can chip easily. Any decent tiler wouldnt't look at the tile twice to suggest this. But also the tile shop should have stressed this too you...I know I would. Cheers Charlie Re: Screed floor- porcelain rectified edge tiles 5Aug 27, 2009 11:44 pm thanks guys. yes the tile shop did strongly advise to screed. its crazy coz we're gonna end up spending more on the labour than the tile itself!! the tiler who wont screed reckons he can make it level and still have the close 1 mil gap by using flexible glue (as our concrete slab is already badly cracked). the tile shop did agree it is possible to 'pack it up' with glue to make it level. will make a decision this weekend... Re: Screed floor- porcelain rectified edge tiles 6Aug 28, 2009 5:40 pm It may save you heaps now not to screed, but you may well find it expensive in the long run. I know the finishing touches to a house tend to cost a fair bit, but you really only get one chance to do it properly.
