Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 24, 2009 12:57 pm We're in the process of trying to get both our house and my parents house carpeted. We've been to a couple of the bigger Name carpet places and seem to be getting nowhere with anyone coming back to us We got a quote from HN over the weekend for our house and I'm rather shocked, but don't know if I should be: Our house is 32squares, so they based their quote on 36 for any extras needed. We looked at the polypropelene IQ150 carpet which was $45sqm. They quoted around $350 each for removal of existing carpet and for underlay. The entire quote however came out at just over $7,000 including installation. It seems like a LOT of money for installation?? Or is this par for the course? Also, we have young kids which is why we were originally interested only in solution dyed nylon, however we still wanted something that felt soft underfoot and not like office carpet! They steered us toward the polypropelene variety, but said it would take 12 weeks to get delivered from US. We have a bub due in 2 mths, we really wanted it sorted before then! Thanks so much for any advice. Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 2Aug 24, 2009 3:52 pm Hi Maman, I find some of the figures you quoted a bit confusing, & don't seem to add up. Especially as you are talking about two separate houses. Your quotes should be based on a detailed floorplan of your homes, and they should calculate how many LINEAR METRES of carpet they are supplying. Then they add costs of installing, and costs to remove existing floorcoverings. If you want 'soft under foot' forget polypropylene. Most are not soft, and if they are, they will crush and mat like crazy. Can you say exactly what carpet you have been looking at? $45 per square metre is expensive for polyprop. Polyprop is cheap, and in most cases, cheap and nasty! For carpets that are soft and reasonably suitable for a growing family, look at low profile nylon cut pile carpets. Should be plenty in stock, and readily available. Ash. Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 3Aug 24, 2009 4:05 pm Thanks Ash, The whole size/dimension thing does my head in, I am totally crap at maths. They did a detailed plan of the house but were very cagey about giving us too many details, I guess to prevent us taking the measurements elsewhere. Our house has a lounge, hallway, study and three bedrooms to carpet. It's not a big house by any means. I think perhaps the 32sqm comment is 32 carpet squares?? I guess I'll have to call them back and get a lineal measurement. Interesting what you say about the polyprop though. It felt the nicest underfoot!! Shows how much we know. We were steered towards SDN as we have two small carpet demolition models (kids) and one on the way. Our house is north facing and very sunny in the lounge and two bedrooms. Another carpet place I've just got back from said you'd only worry about getting SDN for fade qualities, other than that, Nylon was fine with small kids and a much bigger range. It's been hard as we're really after soft underfoot and found that only the cut and loop variety was appropriate, all the others felt like office carpet and we really wanted something with a texture, not plain twist. We looked at the IQ150 carpet (Mohawk) polyprop - apparently it's only available through Harvey Norman and has to come from the States. It doesn't have a jute back, it has a recycled Coke Bottle back! The salesman said it prevented any liquids from reaching the flooring underneath or staining the usual jute. ?? The other two carpet places I've just been to have given me approx quotes of $6200 and $5400 based on this 32sq business (they seemed a little confused with my measurements too but converted in lineal I think) this was for SDN though, not polyprop. Such a massive price difference between $7300 and $5400! ETA: Sorry that quote was just based on our house, not my parents as well. Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 4Aug 24, 2009 4:31 pm "Our house has a lounge, hallway, study and three bedrooms to carpet" Let's see... based on conservative sized rooms; lounge 16 sq/m hallway 4 sq/m study 8 sq/m main bedroom 14 sq/m 2 bedrooms 20 sq/m ...you'd have (I guess) about 62 sq/m You'd probably need around 16 -17 LINEAR METRES of broadloom (3.66m wide) carpet + underlay. P!ss Harvey Norman off! There's no good reason to buy US made carpet. Buy Australian made carpet. If it was a polyprop, and felt nice and soft, it was just manufactured to feel that way. Polyprop has very poor resilience, and will not feel or look that way for long. Nylon is better for resilience and appearance retention. Ash. Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 5Aug 24, 2009 5:09 pm Ash thanks so much for that. What an eye-opener. I've definitely decided HN needs the flick. I got the proper measurements from my step dad for their place and their quote from HN - they said 51 lineal metres for their house and the quote was just over $12,000. This is for the polyprop at $45sqm..... Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 6Aug 24, 2009 5:28 pm maman Ash thanks so much for that. What an eye-opener. I've definitely decided HN needs the flick. I got the proper measurements from my step dad for their place and their quote from HN - they said 51 lineal metres for their house and the quote was just over $12,000. This is for the polyprop at $45sqm..... Still don't add up! 3.66 square metres in a linear metre, = $164.70 per linear metre. 51 linear metres at that prices is $8,399.70 So what else is there to bring it up to $12k? Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 7Aug 24, 2009 5:59 pm We went to Carpet Choice and did 4 bedrooms (including walk in robes) and and office for about $4.5k. Our carpet was a solution dyed nylon with a mid range underlay (there were about 3 to choose from) and it feels nice and cushy (soft underfoot). The dearest quote would have been around the $5k mark. It's the first time I've looked at new carpet, so apart from giving you our facts and figures can't help you much more. Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 8Aug 24, 2009 11:48 pm The prices sound off to me. I'm getting 51 lineal metres of 100% pure wool twist for $9,350 laid on best quality underlay. This includes carpeting the stairs. The rooms to be carpeted are: downstairs - formal lounge, dining, guest room, craft room. Upstairs - 4 bedrooms and large lounge area (wardrobes are included). It's a pretty big house. I'd ask for a re-quote if I were you. Judie Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 9Aug 25, 2009 8:13 am Wow Judie that's very interesting. My parents house (the 51 lineal metres quote) is only a lounge, 3 beds, study, short hallway and stairs. We've had Carpet Court come out already to quote and not heard from them in 11 days either but are going there today. Will be interesting to see what their measurements are. Jeez I thought there was a GFC on, we can't seem to give money away!!! I will definitely post an update later today. Thanks everyone Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 10Aug 25, 2009 2:22 pm A quick update: went out to see Carpet Court again, turns out he was waiting for us to come back to him and we were waiting on him! Okay so our house is 32 lineal metres, not sq metres. He's given us a quote of around high $5's for a Beaulieu SDN carpet at around $51sqm fully installed, which is significantly cheaper than HN's $7,300 for $45sqm polyprop. So, at last we've found someone decent! Thanks so much for all your help and advice Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 11Aug 25, 2009 3:35 pm OK so they have worked out your place needs 32 linear metres. At $51 per sq/m, that is $186.66 per linear metre. For 32 linear metres, that would be $5973.12 Sounds fair enough, and the SDN is a better performer than polyprop. Which Beaulieu carpet is specified? Which underlay is specified? Ash. Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 12Aug 25, 2009 3:58 pm We haven't chosen a particular Bolyu as I've brought some samples home with me to show hubby. I found one I liked called Shifting Sands and get home and it's not on their website!! Looks fairly similar to the Windswept one though I think http://www.beaulieu.com.au/bolyu_product.php?id=55 but will have to check it out. Underlay no idea yet but it is included in the price as is removal of existing, I believe you recommend the Dunlop foam?? Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 13Aug 25, 2009 4:36 pm In the Dunlop range (for carpets along the lines you have indicated, and cues you've given about your budget) I suggested specifically Dunlop Excellay. Anyone reading my posts should be sure to put any comments in context of what is being discussed. Ash. Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 14Aug 25, 2009 5:37 pm sorry for butting in here, though I am just wondering, you are in Melbourne.. have you been to Western Distributors at Sunshine? I have been told that there are not a lot of places around Melbourne that can go close to beating their quotes. That is where we will be shopping! My friend bought carpet from there for the house they have just finished. It is wool, high grade, infact the same carpet that the hilton uses.. and she bought it for $90 a broad loom/or was it sq meter! (of that im not entirely sure) though, RRP on it was just over the $200 mark. Good luck with the carpet. maman We're in the process of trying to get both our house and my parents house carpeted. Building the NBG Hotham 26 (altered by us) through CitiWest Re: Help with a carpet quote please. 15Aug 25, 2009 6:18 pm I don't know much about the Melbourne outlets but yes, in most cities, you can find sellers that have real bargains. Usually they are larger warehouses that have a lot of remnants. So if there's say a commercial contract to fit new commercial carpet to a resort, they are making plenty of profit on the $900k of carpets they ordered, and a hundred linear metres leftover ends up in a warehouse sale at half the normal cost. Great if the carpet suits your place! It can be a matter of being in the right place at the right time though. Having said that, apart from bargain carpets, you should be careful to ensure that the cheap price does not mean sub-standard carpet laying or underlay. These things can take the smile off your face, as they are important if you are to get value from your installed carpet. Cheers! Ash. I have seen Godfrey Hirst polyprop (10 year warranty) for $24 per sqm fully laid. That is $89 per lineal metre.
