Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 23, 2009 1:12 pm Hi all, I was wanting to get some opinions on types of underlays for floating floors. We are going with 1 strip oak Universal Engineered floor boards with the click lock tech. Floor will be laid throughout the whole house scept wet areas directly onto the slab. The flooring supplier reckons the standard 2mm foam over the top of black plastic will suffice. Is it worth upgrading to an acoustic underlay? What are the brands of choice for underlays and rough per m2 cost? cheers, Leon Re: What type of underlay for Click Lock Engineered Timber Floor 2Aug 23, 2009 7:29 pm I think you’ll find they come with their own underlay. Probably just going to use the standard foam underlay over the top of the plastic sheet. Have you looked into this much? Re: What type of underlay for Click Lock Engineered Timber Floor 5Sep 22, 2009 12:00 pm Helmut, I installed some Readyflor uniclick myself a few months ago. I'm no expert, just like to DIY and save money. I bought the underlay Readyflor sell, the 2mm thick white one. I did look at Bunnings etc, but their underlay wasn't much cheaper and was a different thickness so figured it was better to go with the floorboard manufacturers recommended product. I had asked for the Readyflor "quiet step combi-lay" that has plastic film glued onto the 2 mm foam, but they stuffed up and only gave me the quiet step foam underlay without the combined plastic film. Since it was delivered Friday and I had 3 day long weekend setup to install it all I didn't want to wait until the next week to get the underlay exchanged, so I just bought some 200 micron builders plastic from bunnings and put that under the underlay foam. It seems to have worked fine, although was a bit creaky at first, but its all settled down now. I think you'll find the separate 2 mm foam + separate builders plastic is more expensive than the combined quiet step combilay, so I'd go with the combo stuff, provided they deliver what you ask for!! More info here, look for the 22 page readyflor brochure under products, which talks about the underlays: http://www.premiumfloors.com.au Cheers, Paul Re: What type of underlay for Click Lock Engineered Timber Floor 6Sep 22, 2009 1:38 pm Thanks for that Paul, Looks like C@rpet C@ll supply a 2mm foam and a separate roll of black plastic sheeting as the standard. It sounds like this should be enough for a home jobbie. I was wondering if it was worth the upgrade to the fancy rubber (and other varieties) off noise reduction underlays but there is going to be a strict "No Shoes" policy in the house anyway so probably won't wprry about it.
