Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 20, 2009 10:15 pm We had all of our skirting boards tacked on so we can remove them for the timber flooring. Our dilemma is our study and sitting room do not have doors so there will be areas of floorboards meeting carpet in ajoining rooms. So if we raise the skirting boards for the timber can we also raise the skirting for the carpet, otherwise we will have different heights of skirting between these areas. Or do I need to put a thin layer of ply wood in the carpet rooms so the skirting is all the same height and the carpet is against the skirting not under it. Hope this makes sense. Re: Anyone know if you can put carpet under the skirting boards? 2Aug 21, 2009 1:15 am Well, you could cut down the skirting in the timber-floored room or raise the skirting in the carpeted rooms with a spacer the same thickness as the skirting and the same height as the timber floor. Of course, you need to ascertain if the carpet tucked into the smoothedge will be high enough or thick enough to cover the join.....otherwise it will need to be filled/smoothed before painting. I wouldn't raise the carpet as this is likely to make it higher than the timber where they meet. Cheers zeke BTW, one of the joys of a new house is eliminating the mini-steps in floor levels and skirting etc that you often find in old houses that have been altered over the years. I think it's worthwhile going to some trouble to achieve this. You need to carefully check on the finished floor levels of the various surfaces, though. Re: Anyone know if you can put carpet under the skirting boards? 3Aug 21, 2009 7:37 am We are having timber flooring in our living areas, carpet in the rest of the home. Our builder is leaving the skirting off until the flooring is laid in the living areas however in the hall - where the skirting meets he is raising the one side to the same level as the timber - the carpet will slot underneath that way and the skirting will remain constant heights. The hall is the only place this will happen and the height difference is not so different that you would be able to notice. Some things are worth waiting for. Building Standards; Getting It Right! Is this acceptable in a new house build. Floors where installed by builder. Already chips in board and skirting is not flush 0 184 I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 1933 |
