Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 18, 2009 2:08 am Hi guys, Just got a quick enquiry, we are building with Porter Davis. In regards to the floor covering, we have chosen Kimberley Smoke (the light grey one on the right hand side) as our floor tiles. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ There are two different colour grouts, white and Antique white (off white). The consultant told me the pure white looks better with the grey tiles, however, it is quite difficult to clean. The off white grout is easier cleaning. Which one do you think works better with the floor tiles? I know the pure white grout is not easy to clean, however, do you think the off white one can achieve the same performance? All comments are welcome! Thanks a lot! Re: Grout Enquiry! White or Off White? 2Aug 18, 2009 10:03 am This is most impotant when on floors - not so much on walls..... What ever you do go for a darker grout - if anyhting as dark or darker than the tile. Grout is porous, it will darken in any traffic area over time. Blend the tile colour and grout colour, hide the joint as much as possible. As if you contrast and highlight the joint, you will also highlight the areas that degrade in time - while the outer areas with less traffic will look lighter. You can get apoxy grouts that will not darken over time - but I'm sure this is not something offered by your builder. My advice - White of Antique White are the same as Green grout - they are all hard to clean as they will darken on your floor. So go for a practical colour like a mid grey that will show the change in colour least with the tiles you are selecting. PS what was the cream mosaic on the left for? Looks like an unglazed matt vitrified porcelain tile - If it has a dry feeling surface it will be the vitrified -rather hard to keep clean. Charlie Re: Grout Enquiry! White or Off White? 3Aug 18, 2009 10:09 am I have to agree with Zedman, we had white grout in our last house and the high traffic areas looked pretty tacky after a short time, and if anything coloured gets spilled on it, it's practically impossible to remove. I went with light grey with my grey tiles.....which went even lighter after it dried.... and a mocha colour with my brown tiles and that's even lighter than I expected. Re: Grout Enquiry! White or Off White? 4Aug 18, 2009 11:18 am If I was to pick between the two colours I would go the antique white. I think grey grout would look nice. Re: Grout Enquiry! I thought unglazed matt vitrified porcelain tiles were the easiest to keep clean. From my understanding, because the tiles have not been polished, the pores are selaed and the tile is very easy to keep clean. Have I got this wrong? White or Off White? 6Aug 18, 2009 5:21 pm We are building with PD and had a MUCH larger choice of grout colors.. we chose a grey grout color to go with our tiles.. but I think I remember there being browns and creams, ect. Definately more then just 2 choices of grout! I agree with the other posters.. I would NEVER choose white.. much to hard to keep white. White or Off White? 7Aug 18, 2009 5:31 pm Grout is available in all sorts of colours. Go for a colour close to the tile, or slightly lighter. I have some Ardex grout samples. I'd go with something like Ardex 287 'Charred Ash'. Ash. Re: Grout Enquiry! White or Off White? 8Aug 19, 2009 10:05 am Hi Casa Yes true unlike polished porcelain the matt/natural variant does not have the pinholes/pores that are exposed when the tile is cut back an polished. But due to the fact the tile has no glaze it tends to have a dryer(by feel) surface. This makes the surface harder to clean and grit tends to stick to it more. For practicality of cleaning a glazed material (glazed doesnt mean shinny)is always better. Also if you are using a solid light colour on the floor like that think of going for something with a little movement through it - tends to hide a lot more. My number one rule with tiles is you want something thats easy to clean - But also something you dont have to clean all the time. Cheers Charlie Thanks splashers, that makes sense.
