Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Aug 02, 2009 5:06 pm Hi I am so confused. We have just started looking to replace our existing tiles and we are getting conflicting information. Here is the scenario: We currently have about 50 sq m of 330x330 ceramic tiles laid on particle board (our house is on bearers and joists and the particle board is on top of that). From my memory of when they were put down about 14 years ago, they were glued directly onto the particle board. This is what we have been told: 1. We'll need to rip up the tiles, put plastic, chicken wire and cement and then lay the tiles on that. That would be about 40 mm in height which means our tiles would be about 25-30mm higher than our carpet (the tiles butt up to the rumpus, study, lounge and dining - basically the whole ground floor). As well as that we only have the small plain skirtings, and we would basically end up with nothing where the tiles are. We could lift the skirting but because it joins so many other rooms with carpet we would have different heights everywhere. 2. Lay the tiles over the top of the existing tiles. That would mean the tiles would be about 10mm higher than the carpet. 3. Rip up the tiles, lay blueboard and put the tiles on that, I think that would end up only a bit higher than the carpet. Then on top of that, we have differing opinions for different sizes of tiles. Some say if we use 450x450 it will be OK either way and it only matters if we choose 600x600. Others say it matters for both sizes. Who is right??? Obviously due to the carpet I would prefer to use the method that means the tiles end up about the same height as the carpet, but not if that means the tiles will crack. Does anyone have any tips? Experience? Ideas? thanks Liz Re: Laying porcelain tiles 2Aug 02, 2009 7:38 pm Another possibility.... Have the tiles cleaned & etched, then have a levelling compound screed over the top to give a smooth flat surface, and lay something like Karndean vinyl planks on top. Unless of course you are really attached to the idea of having porcelain tiles. There a number of good sheet flooring options, including marmoleum and vinyl. Ash. I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 1921 Hey There. No problems re jumping in. We have been told we should… 7 4323 Firstly the ableflex that has been installed needs (manufactures specification) a sealant cap over the top, preventing water draining down between the slab and the… 3 7744 |
