Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 21, 2009 12:09 pm Hi, We are going with Floating Timber floor in Ground Floor and Carpet on First Floor. The stairs are Real Timber. Now My questions: 1. Our builder is installing 12 mm thick skirting throughout the house. It is painted to match the doors, architraves and wall colours. My flooring installer wants 19 mm thick for ground floor. Should go with the same paint stain on skirting as on doors etc or do I go with something that matches the floor? 2. If I do 19 MM thick for ground floor (just skirting) my architraves will be thinner than skirting. Is this okay? 3. If I change the stain to match the floor (for skirting in ground floor) then my first floor skirting will be in a different shade. what is your opinion on this? I am totally confused. Any help is much appreciated. Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 5Jul 21, 2009 3:25 pm Paint the skirts to match the architraves. Why does the floor guy want the skirts to be thicker? Is he not very accurate with his edges? Make sure you ask the builder not to attach the downstairs skirts, otherwise you have to pull them off again. Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 6Jul 21, 2009 3:29 pm Thanks guys... I have had a massive argument with the flooring guys, they adamant that they need 19 mm. The stock answer is that the flooring is much better with that thickness. They did not tell me this when I signed up with them (3 months ago), this only came about last week, when I asked them to commence installation. Stuck in the middle. Has anyone had this issue of thickness of skirting in their house? Any floating flooring guys - can you comment what was the deal @ your place? Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 7Jul 21, 2009 3:33 pm Yep, Borg's right. Don't mix the thicknesses. It will look crazy. My floor floats, and the expansion gap is 10mm. Tell them to deal with it and stop being such babies. Or can you get your deposit back? Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 8Jul 21, 2009 3:33 pm I hope both parties are not getting confussed. Could one be talking about the height from ground and the other the actual thickness of the arcitrave?? 19mm flooring is better than 12 normally. But we are talking about 2 different things?? or not?? Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 9Jul 21, 2009 3:52 pm Borg, I specifically asked the flooring guyes they told me the thickness of the skirting needs to be 19mm or above. They are least bothered about the height of the skirting. My skirting is 67 mm high. Carmel, Your skirting is 10 mm thick and you have floating. You have been in your place for over 3 weeks..how is the floor going? If it is fine, then I can be firm and say bad luck... Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 10Jul 21, 2009 3:58 pm My floor is fine. It has been down 1 week, we moved in before it was started. Check the floating floor threads for people who might have had theirs a bit longer. The manufacturer's recomendation for my floor was a 10mm expansion gap. Can you find out what is recommended for your floor by the manufacturer, not the installer? Can you ask the installer exactly what their reason is? Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 11Jul 21, 2009 3:59 pm sorry should have been more clear by the height i was referring to th height at which it is off the ground. This way you can place the flooring underneath the skirts for a better finish. (Like they do for carpet sometimes) Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 12Jul 21, 2009 4:41 pm When I spoke with them , they said that the reason that they need 19mm is because this will sit on top of the floor. They have no issue of thickness as regards to carpet. I will have a chat to to them again and see what they come up with now. I can't take the deposit back as it was non refundable. Also, whatever work I have seen of these guys, it seems to be of good quality. I might call up the manufacturer and confirm from them about the clearance. Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 13Jul 22, 2009 11:43 am Well, I had a chat to the guys who are doijng our floor and also went to a couple of shops for independence advice. Here is what i gathered: 1. Our flooring guy says that we can put timber in 12 mm wide skirting, but then we might see the gap overtime, between skirting and floor. He said this can be eliminated by putting a thin Timber strip on an angle to Skirting and Timber (He called it by some technical name-can't remember) 2. Independent guys said that thicker the skirting better gap they can leave between the board and the wall. They also reckoned that this Timber strip is the way to go should our skirt boards be thin. Now I am more confused than ever. Do we have any flooring expert, who can save me....Any feedback, inputs, knowledge absolutely will be cherished... Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 15Jul 22, 2009 12:23 pm It is called Elyseum...and gouing for Merabau...one strip..It has plywood base... also they told us that it does contract and expand as any timber does (probably trying to cover their A*se) Any suggestions? Or should I just stop thinking and go for Quad over floor and Skirting? Better still drop Floating Flor and go for tiles... Choices...they are spoiling me and getting me insane... Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 17Jul 23, 2009 10:56 pm Hi Mohit, my friend has the quad and it looks quite nice, so if you have to have it don't worry - everything will be fine. I'm sure that you could get some lovely tiles if you wanted to. I'm not a fan of tiles - I find them too hard and cold. But I bet there are some that would be great. Try not to worry too much. Whatever you choose will be lovely, your choice won't send the world spiraling into an abyss. Take a nice deep breath, chill for a second... then make your decision. Then relax and remind yourself that you put a lot of thought into this and it is not a mistake. Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 18Jul 24, 2009 8:53 am Thanks Carmel, You are right...we are thinking too much of it...i guess the reason is that we are so near to finally getting the house... We will stick with the original plans and see what the flooring guys come up with...they reckon they can manage now with 12mm but the finish might not be a geat one...will wait for this weekend's trip to the flooring mob to get a final view... Re: Skirting, Floating, Carpet....Insanity 19Jul 24, 2009 4:35 pm How about telling them that you want the timber 5 mm from the walls and that you take responsibility for any problems. But first, we need a timber expert to tell us how much timber really expands - not the gap that is preferred. We have tentatively selected the Elyseum and don't want to run into the same prob! If you can't name them here, can you PM me?
