Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 18, 2009 6:07 pm I've done a search on this and could only find a brief thread which is related...but hoped for some more feedback pls What do people normally do when you have three different floor surfaces all of varying levels. We plan on the following and I simply can't get my head around how this will work: 1. Tiles in wet areas (WC, bathroom, laundry) 2. Carpet (formal living + lounge) 3. Solid timber boards (19mm) over plywood or batons (19mm) One carpet guy told us to get the timber guy to install "ramps"! The timber guy told us to get the carpet guy to lay the carpet over more plywood or double-up the underlay (!!) and nobody has any view re yet another level for tiles...HELP!!! Anyone who's ever faced this and found a solution...I beg you, please put me out of my misery and tell me how you did it...LOL Pix Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Re: Varying Floor Levels -- Any ideas? 2Jul 18, 2009 6:54 pm Firstly, do the tiles meet the timber or the carpet? Next, what type of carpet and underlay combination are you considering? (Overall thickness)? Ramping the edges of the timber is preferable. But if there's a big height differential, a carpet layer can using a levelling compound to ramp the floor up a bit to the timber. Using underlay to add thickness is NOT a good idea. Ash. Re: Varying Floor Levels -- Any ideas? 3Jul 18, 2009 8:35 pm I will have tile, carpet and timber, all at the same level. The reference level is the timber flooring: 13 mm Slimwood + 12 mm ply (glue may add a bit, ill have to check): 25 mm For carpet, add plywood under carpet to bring carpet up to timber flooring level For tiles not in wet area, add a mortar bed to bring it up to the required level For tiles in wet areas: recess the slab by about 25 mm. then put down the sloping screed such that the high end near the door is 25 mm above the slab level (non recessed height) No ugly ramps, no steps. Haven't done it yet, but the builder knows what I'm after and I intend to get some more information on exact heights and do some cross sections. There would be additional costs in putting plywood beneath carpets and building up the flat tile sections, but it should look superb.
