On our contract it states tiles to entry, passage, kitchen, meals, and wet area's carpet to the rest. But on our working drawings it shows tiles to all of the above and also the family. We originally wanted tiles to the family but were told this would be extra and not part of the deal. Now we're not sure what would be best I like the thought of Carpet as it is warmer for the family, with two kiddies, Dog Cat etc but Hubby would prefer Tiles mmmm SO IT'S UP TO THE FORUM WHATS YOUR OPINION https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=19655 FINALLY slab down 5th SEPT Oct 16 Bricking/ plaster starting Dec 1 Painting started END OF CONTRACT IS UP SOON HURRY UP AND FINISH MY HOME..... countdown to 27th Feb. With 3 boys under 7, a cat, a dog and a messy husband I wouldn't even consider carpet in my family room If you want warmer & cosier, add an area rug. So much easier and cheaper to replace that then a whole room of carpet iykwim? Good luck with your decision and build! And just to throw a spanner in the works.... I'd also tile that little hallway to the powder room. Carpet will wear there very quickly. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 4Jul 16, 2009 4:58 pm I would probably go with the tiles, this area leads to the alfresco, people can then walk in and out without walking onto carpet. A nice big rug in the area would help define the family room area and still make it cosy. Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 5Jul 16, 2009 4:59 pm joles Tiles, tiles, tiles definitely! And just to throw a spanner in the works.... I'd also tile that little hallway to the powder room. Carpet will wear there very quickly. I agree with joles, people can get to the powder room without having to walk on any carpet. Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 6Jul 16, 2009 5:00 pm Actually - What Joles said as well! I'd also be inclined to tile the rear hallway too. We built our last house when we had 4 kids under 5 yo and were sorry we didn't get the grout fixed up so we didn't spare in this house John, Tarin and the Kids Built and moving in to the Regent Grande with Masterton homes http://thebrownsaremovingtothecountry.blogspot.com Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 9Jul 16, 2009 5:18 pm I'd say tiles too. We only carpeted the bedrooms and 1 of the living areas (where we specifically wanted to be able to sit on comfy carpet) and the rest of the living area , kitchen, wet etc are tiles. Opinions please 10Jul 16, 2009 5:21 pm Yes, I would do hard floor - tiles, vinyl, timber etc - not carpet - in all traffic areas and areas open to outside and kitchen. In your plan I think the family room has to be same floor as the kitchen and you wouldnt have carpet in there . On your plan I would only be carpetting bedrooms. liveing, study and maybe games room, depending on your intended usage of same, all other floors hard floors. Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 11Jul 16, 2009 5:35 pm I love carpet, but with "that" floor plan there's no way I would put carpet in that room. I agree with Joles, tiles! Building Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=13002 Site start: 8th July 2009 Handover: 11/12/2009! 5 months total build time. 40 sqs of luxuary...Bliss! Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 12Jul 16, 2009 5:49 pm yea there is a special thing you can put over the grout. i wouldn't do floor boards or timber if you have young kids we had laminate floor boards and the kids scratched the crap outta them John, Tarin and the Kids Built and moving in to the Regent Grande with Masterton homes http://thebrownsaremovingtothecountry.blogspot.com Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 13Jul 16, 2009 5:50 pm Tiles definitely. It is a high traffic area last thing you want is food and crap all through there. Will be much more manageable with tiles. Just add a big mat for warmth if needed. Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 14Jul 16, 2009 5:57 pm TILES TILE AND TILES I say.... I agree with Joles too..... and Helyn definately needs to be the same as the kitchen.... we are only carpeting bedrooms and our lounge/home theatre as we are planning on children in the future somewhere and also we have 2 dogs and our family opens to what will be our outdoor entertaining! I agree with the others on putting a mat in there if you wish.... 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen! Cheers joles great idea doing that hall bit I'll tell SS tomorrow at our official meeting to discuss plans and changes etc. Thanks everyone for the advise Tiles it is, I will let DH know tonight he'll be very pleased it makes sense cleaning wise, and the flow will be much better, like a few people mentioned big rugs are always an option. LATROBE 320 WITH DENNIS FAMILY HOMES Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 16Jul 16, 2009 7:19 pm Yes I would think of it that way, if you go for tiles you can always get some nice big rugs to make it more comfortable or warmer where needed. That's what I envisaged with our place when we chose tiles for everywhere except the bedrooms. Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 17Jul 16, 2009 7:24 pm Tiles, tiles and tiles I agree with those who agreed on tiles and yes the hallway to the powder room, great idea it will get very grubby and worn. Ooooh just realised I'm a bit late Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 18Jul 16, 2009 8:32 pm yeah l'm another who def agree's with tiles. We tiled the entire place except for the 4 bedrooms ... meant we could choose some great looking rugs for the rumpus/HTR and open space area. Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 19Jul 16, 2009 11:51 pm I'd say carpet but the mob rules so... TILES I wouldn't really say carpet Re: What would you do tiles or carpet in family? Opinions please 20Jul 17, 2009 8:45 pm My vote will go with tiles too. We are also building with DFh and similar floorplan. OUrs is harvard - its has got similar floorplan to your Hartley. We are using tiles for our family. and we also use tiles for the hallway that leads to the minor bedrooms. From memory, it should cost a few grand more.
