Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 06, 2009 12:58 pm I up to a point where im deciding on tiles for my meals/kitchen/halls/bathrooms. Now my questions is what are the arguments for/against dark or light tiles. Im currently liking Grey & Brown tiles. Also what do you think will sell easier in the future. I am planning to build my indoor colour scheme around my tiles. I have chosen tan bricks for outside. Re: Tiles, Dark VS Light 2Jul 06, 2009 1:56 pm We went a medium brown (although in with the blinds shut looks more dark brown). We had oridinary thought white but were talked out of it cause were told darker is better cause doesn't show grime as much! Well it seems to be true for us.
That would be one of the pros for darker less grime shows up, l guess with lighter it can make a room seem bigger or so l've heard. i think when it comes to re-sale some of it comes down to taste, a person will look at the house as a whole as oppose to just the tiles! What other colors are you thinking of using say if you chose the darker tile v's the lighter tile! Re: Tiles, Dark VS Light 3Jul 06, 2009 1:58 pm I go for the ones that do not show every mark - with three kids in the house I cannot keep up. I would be more concerned with the texture and slip resistance. We will be using mocha tones on the bathroom floor areas (first time for us as we always have had white) and teracotta tones in the kitchen (to go with existing timber kitchen). As for our outdoor areas - we get a lot of bird / bat droppings where we live and are going for tiles that my hubby discribes as "already dirty" similar to this http://images03.olx.com/ui/2/29/32/19272732_1.jpg:lol: progress viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20401 sculptures viewtopic.php?f=36&t=26607 pole trouble viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25988 Re: Tiles, Dark VS Light 4Jul 06, 2009 4:53 pm Light tiles will make a room brighter in general, and I do think it makes a space seem bigger (depends on the wall colors too). Light tiles can show up a lot of dirt but dark ones can show some dirt up even more. I chose dark tiles in the bathrooms and light tiles for the living areas. Both are rough / textured types rather than smooth and refined so hopefully show up the dirt a bit less. So you have dark and cosy, it does make my smallish bathroom look even smaller, but of course I still like the colours and don't think I'd change them... http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp253/mtbpebble/IMG_1006.jpg The general areas are light and bright, rugs and furnishings would make it a bit more homely. Admittedly I may have chosen a darker tone for these tiles I reckon, but I don't think I would have gone really dark. In the bedrooms we're having brown carpets, the shade isn't cream or really dark, somewhere in between. http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp253/mtbpebble/IMG_1011.jpg As others have said for resale it depends so much on peoples tastes, we have kept our place fairly "neutral" because of resale but also because that's what we like anyway and there are other ways to make the place more "you". I would tend to say just go with your gut instinct. Re: Tiles, Dark VS Light 5Jul 28, 2009 1:35 pm elastic I up to a point where im deciding on tiles for my meals/kitchen/halls/bathrooms. I am planning to build my indoor colour scheme around my tiles. I have chosen tan bricks for outside. Having just lived in two places in succession with white tiled floors in the living areas, I can say they're not very practical, they show up every bit of dirt, dust and hair. I think for future selling purposes anything neutral will be great - it sounds like that's the direction you're heading in if you're liking greys and browns. Pebble - love your bathroom!! Re: Tiles, Dark VS Light 6Jul 28, 2009 2:39 pm I would go for lightish in the living area.. But it all depends on your colour scheme and what you like. I find that lightish shows less dirt than a lot of darker colours. Re: Tiles, Dark VS Light 7Jul 28, 2009 7:34 pm Just want to say that your bathroom looks great, Pebble - gorgeous, I love it!!!! Re: Tiles, Dark VS Light 8Jul 28, 2009 8:09 pm Hi elastic! We went with dark tiles and I would never do it again! I'm actually on here looking to see whether you can possibly paint over them!!!! We got the same tiles throughout the living area and wet areas. They are a dark grey/brown colour and a matt finish (no flecks or other colours mixed in). They show up every bit of food, dust and hair and every single footprint or handprint (handprints from small babes playing on the floor!) (from the natural oils from the skin). It could quite possibly just be sheer bad luck on our part; or a normal thing with dark tiles; I don't know. I now wish I'd gone for something a lot lighter; ideally I would have liked floorboards, but we were too tight to spend the money I think because our kitchen cupboards are dark too, this doesn't help! Anyway, good luck with what you choose! xMadmel Hi All, I am looking to go with tiles instead of laminate timber flooring throughout my living areas for my new build (Ashbury 29 - Henley).
