Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jul 04, 2009 10:31 pm Hi All Building a new house. Like everyone, we've successfully negotiated most of the build without too many dramas. However, we had a clanger today. In the contract we decided to supply porcelain tiles for the downstairs wet areas. This was so that all of downstairs could have the same 300x600 porcelain tile. In our verbal discussion with the builder they advised that laying the porcelain was not a problem, only an extra cost ($500 for 5m2). They then specified in the contract we would supply the tiles, they would lay them. Anyway when the time came to lay the tiles, we spoke to the tiler and he came accross knowing what he was doing and all accomodating. We even asked him to quote on laying the rest of our tiles after handover. Today we went to see the wet areas laid and were very disappointed. The tiles/colours are perfect, but the grout width is shocking. The sales people said 4mm floor, 3mm wall for the ceramics, 1.5mm for the porcelain. The reality is 6mm floor, 5mm wall, and 4mm porcelain. The tiles have been reasonably well laid, but we never expected such a gap that is for sure. Especially the wall and the porcelain where we asked in particular. On checking the contract of course it was the one thing we forgot to check, grout width is not specified. Does anyone think we have a leg to stand on? Re: Grout width not in contract 3Jul 04, 2009 11:07 pm Is it white on white? Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Grout width not in contract 4Jul 04, 2009 11:21 pm The procelain is beige ob beige. The tiles look OK, but not for the main area. We are going to get someone else to lay teh rest. The wall/floor in the bathroom are OK, the grout lines disgraceful, but I suppose we have to live with them.
