Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 15, 2007 6:25 pm I'm considering a house which has tired old carpet. Instead of putting in new carpet at maybe $40/sq-m, I'm thinking of just ripping up all the carpet and polishing the floorboards. Anyone know roughly how much that costs (per sq/m) ?
Also, if you get carpet ripped up and new carpet put in, do the installation people also vacuum the old floors to get rid of 30 years of under-carpet dust ? thanks Re: Cost to rejuvinate & repolish 2May 15, 2007 6:39 pm ((((Also, if you get carpet ripped up and new carpet put in, do the installation people also vacuum the old floors to get rid of 30 years of under-carpet dust)))))
Ohhh now that’s a good question…….. Now which trade do you know that will give you THAT much service with a smile???? Save yourself some money and rip the old carpet up yourself. Pay them to take it to the tip, but do the take-up on your own. This way you can give the timber floors a GOOD going over, I guarantee the carpet company wont do it as good as you will. Idea----- Rip the carpet up, check out the floors, see how good they look, then make your mind up on which way you want to go. Turn around on getting new carpet….(if in Australia at the time) is roughly 2 weeks. Can’t help you with the cost of re-doing timber floors, sorry! I’m trying to get some builders in on the forum, but I can’t spark their attention….shame!!! I'm ripping up the carpet & disposing of it myself, then getting the pros in to do 65 sq metres of cypress pine - sanding & applying a 2 pack finish. Quotes ranged from "1200 cash, no GST brutha" to $1800. So that works out at approximately $18.50 to $28 per square metre. Approx $300 more if the nails need punching & puttying (which I think they will). These prices are for a floor in very good condition. Obviously damaged or poor floors will cost more. Re: Cost to rejuvinate & repolish 5May 16, 2007 7:34 pm Thanks. Looks like the cost to polish is about the same for cheap carpet. That's good news 7 12007 We were lucky in that our old house was so small (86 square metres) compared to the new house, they were able to take enough readings around the old backyard house before… 8 37143 Fair Trading can issue orders to rectify and complete but once the matter goes to NCAT these orders are automatically vacated.
