Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 21, 2009 11:50 am Ok so here's a question that I cannot seem to work out a good solution for...getting the flooring just right. Plan to do ReadyFlor Spotted Gum in 1 Strip in Kitchen/Meals/Family/Entry and also the Lounge which is sunken by a single step. Thanks to another member, I've got a staircase manufacturer who has given a good price on doing the staircase in Pine/MDF which will be painted and polished Spotted Gum treads/newels/balusters and rails to match the floor. Dilemma #387 of building is how do I get the flooring perfect where it meets the tiles in the laundry, the step down to the lounge or even where it meets the aluminium sliding door frame (not sure if i can fit a bit of quad etc there to hide the gap) if you're supposed to have a 10mm expansion gap around all the extremities? I have seen the vinyl wrapped mouldings and trims that they use but is it just me or do they look terrible defeating the purpose of spending so much money on a great looking floor? Using a trim at the laundry where it joins the tiles doesn't matter so much as it isn't a central point. But the 1.2m step down opening to my lounge will look rather cheap with a moulding? I have thought of getting a piece of spotted gum and having someone machine it to some sort of bullnose on the step down side and following the uniclic grove & tounge on the other side for the boards to fit to it. But won't be easy getting the height of it to match perfectly or the finish. Last resort panic solution that flooded my brain was to box up the lounge and get the concreter back out to fill it in! Could do some joists and bring it to the same level of as the rest of the slab but thought it might make a bit of noise when walking over the floor? Anyone else tackled this? Re: Floating floor & steps or transitions to tiling - How? 2Jun 28, 2011 2:15 am We are about to do the same. Our daughter claimed the sunken lounge gave it style, so we gave up on the filling it with concrete idea. ( plus the weight could move the foundations I guess ) Now we have to go down a 150mm step. Next we need to butt into tiles around a fireplace in two rooms. And just to be difficult, I want to put a row of tiles along the upper edge of the sunken lounge to give a visual indicator because so many people trip down it when leaving the house. I have even bought LED strip lighting in a plastic tube to put along the transition. My second question is, what happens after you put heavy furniture on top of the floating floor. Bookshelves, piano, heavy table. Are these realy going to move in summer when the boards expand? Can I glue down the edges by the step of the sunken lounge? Thanks, that's the motivation I needed to give it a try sooner rather than one day! 4 3000 To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even.
