Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 15, 2009 11:37 pm Hi all, im hoping some flooring guru's out there can offer some advice. I will try to keep the story as short as possible, basically we are having 3 different floor coverings in our house being: tiles in wet areas - max 10mm high carpet and underlay - app 17mm high spotted gum overlay flooring 12mm on 12mm ply so 24mm high Our dillema is trying to get all of the finished heights the same as well as laying the coverings in the best possible way. We cant do anything about the tiling as it is being done by the builder. We are thinking of adjusting the height of the carpet to meet the timber by installing it on 7mm ply. Are there any advantages or disadvantages in doing this? Will this cause any problems for the carpet layers? We could avoid some of this drama by not using the ply under the timber floor but so far the jury is still out on installing it over a moisture barrier/membrane instead. Again are there any advantages or disadvantages in either method? The only idea we have come up with so far to meet the timber nicely with the tiles is to have the timber board in the doorways bevelled down to meet the tiles. Is there a better option? Sorry for the long winded question, I would greatly appreciate any help/ideas you can offer. Thanks in advance Re: Varying levels between floor coverings - best solution? 2Jun 15, 2009 11:49 pm I'm not a guru, but here are my observations (and what I will be doing). 1) Tiled floors are normally laid on a screed (mortar bed). This will bring it up by about 25 mm at the doors (to allow for a fall to the waste with only 10 mm). So your tiles will be 35 mm above the slab level. The ideal solution is to recess the slab. 2) 12 + 12 mm timber flooring is good. 3) Yes, apply plywood beneath the carpeted area to bring it up to 24 mm. We are building with H3nley so maybe someone building with them can shed some light on this. Good to know we are on the right track though. Re: Varying levels between floor coverings - best solution? 4Jun 16, 2009 12:22 am Wonder how they get the tiled area to have a fall. You do have a floor waste I assume? Re: Varying levels between floor coverings - best solution? 6Jun 16, 2009 8:21 pm That explains why there is no fall. No floor waste sounds like a Melbourne thing. You can still lay a 14 mm mortar bed before laying the tiles.
