Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 14, 2009 12:04 pm We went by carpet court & carpet call and were finally happy with the selected carpet. We were suppose to go in and sign up today but last night I was doing some searches on underlays and what would suite best etc and found our exact same carpet of choice with the underlay we had selected at online carpets for $2k cheaper Has anyone used them before. Were they any good? Or should I just pay the extra and go with carpet call? Thanks in advance! Re: Has anyone tried onlinecarpets ? 2Jun 14, 2009 4:32 pm Make sure you are comparing apples with apples. Cheaper normally means costs are being cut somewhere? Any quotes you consider should be based upon the specific plan of your home, and show where all seams are. If all else is the same and prices are cheaper, it's either cheaper due to large bulk buying of the carpet by the contractor, or less is allowed for laying. Great if its a cheaper price for the same carpet/underlay and laying plan. Not great if costs are saved by cheap laying. Ash. Re: Has anyone tried onlinecarpets ? 3Jun 14, 2009 8:26 pm Hi Ash, The carpet & underlay all match exactly with what we got quoted for at carpet call. In regard to the seams, both carpet call & carpet court had identical seams & if onlinecarpets give us something different, it would set of alarms. My maaaaiiiinnnn concern is in the laying....how do we know the sort of laying we are going to get I am going to be giving onlinecarpets a call tomorrow and requests for their portfolio of previous work or some testimonials from previous jobs. After Phonenix's experience with ***...i am just soooooo Is this good enough...whatelse can we check out so that we don't end up Re: Has anyone tried onlinecarpets ? 4Jun 14, 2009 10:55 pm Hard to say... Be direct with them. Get their quote written, and based on a contract copy, showing the laying plan. Ask what is the price to supply the carpets and underlay only, and the cost of laying seperately. Ask who their very best layer is, and if the carpets will be laid according to AS/NZS2455.1:2007 (the Standard). Ask for the installer's credentials/qualifications/experience. Maybe ask if you can speak with the installer to get his take on laying. Ask if he uses a powerstretcher on each job? If he seals seams before seaming? If you find he's arguing that these things are not necessary, it might be good to move on. If it all doesn't seem good, consider getting in a layer seperately. Basically, qualify everything in writing, and be prepared to walk if they are not sounding good. If the contractor gets the idea that you are discerning, and expect to have your carpets laid well, they should get their best guy on the job to avoid hassles. I should be able to source a few good layers in Melbourne if you are stuck. Ash. Re: Has anyone tried onlinecarpets ? 5Jun 15, 2009 10:15 am Ash, you're an absolutely God-send...
