Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 08, 2009 5:30 pm We are getting our house built through a local builder and like all builders not alot include floor coverings. He includes tiles to wet areas. We would like to get carpet to all bedrooms, study and lounge room, tiles to wet areas. The rest of the areas we are a little stuck on. we can't decide whether to do the kitchen, meals, family etc areas in tiles (matching bathroom), floorboards or floating floors.....? What would you do, what do you think? Re: Tiles, floor boards or floating floors? 2Jun 08, 2009 5:48 pm Our current rental has floor boards in the kitchen and it doesn't really work for us. Dropped a knife from the counter once and it made a scratch on the floor. Tile can handle a bit more punishment in the kitchen. Or maybe I'm only a klutz Trying this building gig one more time. Re: Tiles, floor boards or floating floors? 3Jun 08, 2009 6:04 pm I love floorboards. We had them in our previous house and loved them and are getting bamboo floorboards in the new place. We have tiles in our rental which I hate. They are cold, show every fleck of dirt, fluff etc because of the shine and are much less forgiving when our little one falls over. The key with floorboards is to consider the "hardness rating" of the various species of woods as that makes a huge difference. For instance, as mentioned in a previous post you need to check on the hardness rating of wooden floorboards as they can easily scuff and mark or even get big dints in them from something as small as a stilletto heel. On the other hand tiles can be cold and shiney if you choose those particular styles. You can get non glossy tiles which are great, but remember that in your kitchen if you tend to drop a lot of things they will smash. My preference is tiles but thats just me. You need to look at how you're going to 'use' the floor. Do you have kids? Do you have pets? What about cleaning methods? My new home is a combination of tiles and floating floors. Tiles in the main areas and high traffic areas, so that is hallway, kitchen, dining, games and living. The floating floors are in all bedrooms and theatre room. Tiles are easy to clean and quite tough, I don't have to worry about people walking on them with their shoes or heels. Although the floating floor we have chosen is a better quality it is only appropriate for bedrooms and theatre because I could see it getting trashed if it were in a high use area. Real wood floors are lovely, but the cost!!! And for main areas of a house, I don't know how you go about cleaning them. Can you use water on them? If you're worried about noise of floating floors, you can get acoustic underlay to prevent this. I have floating floor in my existing home and it's not noisy, unless you stomp on them. But all floor is hard.... wouldn't it hurt even with floor boards? sooty Oh I repeated "do you have kids" twice. The second one should have read "Do you have pets?" We are goign to get a dog pretty much as soon as we move in I'm so excited!! Re: Tiles, floor boards or floating floors? 13Jun 09, 2009 10:07 pm I voted tiles - We had 2 kids from and a dog and our tiles survived all the spills and messes pretty well - Kids survived the falls without any major accidents too. Re: Tiles, floor boards or floating floors? 14Jun 10, 2009 9:32 am I love the look of floor boards, but prefer tiles for practicality. So, I've voted tiles -but I really do think it depends on where you live and how you live. If you live somewhere cold, you'll need to use lots of rugs to keep your toes warm. Unless you're a fanatic cleaner, floorboards with kids and dogs are going to look shocking really quickly. We 'live' in our house - kids leave their junk everywhere and despite my best intentions, I'm busy and don't clean every day. We'd kill floorboards in a heartbeat. We had laminex floorboards in the rental we just left, and while they wear better than wood, they were only 8 years old and quite scratched. The previous occupant had a dog inside and it showed! Re: Tiles, floor boards or floating floors? 15Jun 10, 2009 1:37 pm I have to agree with it depends on your family and lifestyle. We are putting floating floors in our house, we have 4 kids and I think it merely comes down to whether you know you are going to look after them or not. We take our shoes off before going inside ALL THE TIME, we only eat and drink at the table, kids will know not to play with their toys on the timber floors, all their toys stay in their rooms and no dogs inside. So I think if your REALLY want floorboards and know that your "lifestyle" won't trash them, then I say go for it.
